I guess my topic description would be a bit unfair. I wasn't disappointed persay as I had no expectations for the movie. I've never been a Spiderman fan nor have I liked the character very much. The movies have always been amusing to watch (as almost any comic movie) but it just didn't do it for me.
The story felt rushed and overly packed in. They brought Venom into the cinema one or two movies too early. They built up too much sympathy for two "villains" before showing them as villains. And some of the actors could have been removed from the movie or certain scenes and it would have still worked out well.
Since I already made a length commentary on another board. I thought I'd just keep this one short and to the point.

I haven't seen it, I'm figuring on going later this weekend on a late show so I can see if I like it or not with out loud children that make movies impossible to watch. Parents explain to your children about being quite during the movie because they should be told it is rude and will get them beaten up later in life.
EDIT: okay twice now I've given parental advise when I don't have kids, something tells me that one of these days my outside observations are going to get me in trouble.

Too true. Too true
Anyways, I have to wait till I get paid next week so it'll be a while before i get a chance to see it, and hopefully by then some of those kids won't be there cause some of the intial opening hype will have died down

I got the see the midnight showing, and I did like it. I have to say, it wasn't the best, but it wasn't bad by any means. They did focus on out-of-context humor and bit more than necessary, and considering the time frame (it's just over 2 hours and 20 minutes) they probably should've extended the length or get rid of the fluff.
I do have agree with the Mix-izzle that there were a few too many "main" characters, and after they've developed, they were kind of "let go" and made their ending a bit too ambiguous. I can deal with a cliffhanger, but if you're going through all of that, don't leave too little to speculate about either, to the point where they almost seem like a worthless, unimportant character. Again, if they had either omitted a one or two, or drawn the movie out a bit more (which I wouldn't've minded at all) probably could've made it better.
That's not to say "don't go see it". I would still reccomend seeing Spiderman 3. The actors, while in excessive amount, all played their roles well, the action sequences are effin' awesome, and while some of the jokes were awkwardly misplaced or inappropriate, they still were kinda funny.

The spiderman movies are crap.
Full stop.
No good.
Tony/Toby/Angsty McAngstpants McGuire is a bad actor in my books.
Spiderman is my alltime favorite superhero! He's witty, funny, a dickhead to the baddies and he also Kicks ass! The movies killed that.
Tony/Toby/Angsty McAngstpants can do angst. That's all he can act. I guess it works for the first movie, but it does not suit from then on, except in the climactic action scenes. Even when he's kissing his wife-to-be, he still looks emo.
by the time of the third movie, spidey should be cracking jokes like baddies' jawbones. admittedly, he does try it a couple of times, but overall, Tony/Toby/Angsty McAngstpants' preformance makes me want to go cut myself so i can be just like him.
But at least by Spiderman 3, they're using some actually decent looking CGI. In SM1, the only real-looking parts were when they were all either dead or lying on the ground bleeding! Green Goblin looked like... well... the green goblin looked about as gay as it is possible to be, in his tight pants, always pointing his ass high in the air, pretty much shouting, "**** me, spidey!"
Anyhoo, I didn't like SM1, SM2 was a little better, and SM3 will probably be crap when i see it. But i'm still going to see it. I'm a consumer Whore. (And how!)

If you're so absolutely against the angst-y ness, Snr. Loco Pez, you're gonna hate this one. After the Symbiote gets into his system, (sorry if that's a spoiler to anyone, but if you've seen any of the trailers, you know that's what happens) he gets a very emo look to him. I didn't like it either, but I don't think one character's hairstyle should affect how I feel about the movie in whole.

If that's a spoiler to anyone that's really sad. Venom was the coolest spidey villain ever, I'd hate to think anyone hadn't heard of him already.

May 5 2007, 05:07 AM
The previews never actually showed Venom... just Symbiote Spiderman.
And I kinda felt that the Sandman's role in all of this was really downplayed, now that we're on a discussion of villians. Again, if you didn't know Sandman was in this as well, you should've, but I'm sorry anyways. He was on a 7-Eleven slushee cup... jeez.
Well, Sandman's role... they didn't really focus on him too much. They got the jist of his motive, and then just made it very narrative of him. They didn't go as far into detail as I would've expected. Again, because they went through all the effort of manufacturing slushee cups after him.

May 5 2007, 07:34 PM
Seeing as they had Sandman, the Symbiote, AND Harry as the Green Goblin, I was really expecting something better.
Disappointed? Only because I made the mistake of having expectations.
Ultimately... I thought the way they wrote Peter was just plain stupid. I'm also starting to wonder just how much sanity is left in the director. The first one was great, I loved it. The second one was fairly impressive as well, albeit with a few annoyances. But this one... this one is following the typical rule of sequels in Hollywood.
"No sequel shall be of equal or greater quality than the original! The Movie gods have spoken!" Something along those lines.
Some of the humor in it was really inappropriately placed as well.

I agree! I went to see SM3 with REALLY low expectations, but it was really quite good! I know i bad-mouthed it before, but i quite liked it.
But i am seriously going to buy it on DVD just to make fun of it!
Eg;
Peter: You just need to get back on the horse...
MJ: Don't give me the horse!
Me: that's what she said last night!
Aunt may: A husband has to put his wife first...
My friend: Ahh! Green Goblin! Wife first! (Mimes holding wife in front of face)
Peter dances down street after he has his all new emo look.
Me: (Quoting Scrubs) Dude, what did we say about dancing in public? Only black guys and gays... and emos, apparently.

I dunno, Jack Nicholson already made a pretty good Joker.
As for Venom/Eddie Brock, I think Topher Grace (Eric from That 70's Show) did wonderfully. I just think if they'd given more screentime towards Venom, he'd have seemed a lot better. They shouldn't have focused on Sandman as much.

Spider-Man has always been one of my favorite superheroes. Lately unfortunately, he has been emoified. Brian Micheal Bendis is by far one of the worst comic book writers in history and what does he get to write? Ultimate Spider-Man. What are the movies loosely based on? Ultimate Spider-Man. I haven't really enjoyed any of the movies and I've heard the Spider-Man cries buckets in the third movie. I miss the old Spidey. The quips, the jabs, the insults. He was only emo on his own time.

It was pretty bad...the only good parts were the comedic elements, and not because they were funny but because the entire theater groaned at all of them. Best part of the movie: Peter accidentally smacks MJ, theres an awkward silence...then from the front of the theater we all hear someone go "DAAAAAAMN!" really loudly. That cracked the entire theater up, best laugh in the whole movie.

May 12 2007, 09:18 AM
I was really disappointed with the film, as I many high expectations especially since I heard Venom was going to be in this one. Caution this will have some spoilers.
A little background on this, my brother was a big comic book reader when we were younger, and I would occasionally read some that he picked up and found many a kick ass group of girls which I really enjoyed reading about(Psylocke I'm looking at you!), anyway, I never liked Spiderman, until I started reading the stuff that involved the black suit and then the symbiote stalking Eddie Brock and finding him when he was at his lowest and joining to make Venom. I loved how even though Venom was a bad guy, he still had a small bit of humanity left inside of him, he just also had this overwhelming hatred of Spiderman.
And while that initial storyline was great, and the Carnage stuff was good too, I stopped reading at the Maximum Clonage stuff as it just got ridiculous.
Ok, background finished, anyway, so I went and saw Spiderman 3 and left really really angry. You see, I knew from reading a lot of interviews with Sam Raimi that he didn't like Venom, that he was a 70's Spiderman fan, not a late 80's early 90's one. But I didn't realize he hated Venom and the black suit that much. In watching the movie I found that even though the black suit was supposed to make him more powerful and shockingly dark, we don't really see that, all we see is emo-Pete and a really terrible sequence of dancing, he never really did much more with the black suit than he did when he was just regular old Spiderman. It felt very under-utilized. Then came Venom, which had some cool designs, but was a totally wasted villain, who acted way out of character, and dies. DIES! Venom doesn't die. Venom lives on, to fight again. They wrecked a wonderfully crafted comic mythos, all because Raimi apparently doesn't want to see Venom used ever again in this movie continuity.
And that's another thing, stop killing all the villians. Jeez, we've already lost Octavius, and now we lose Sandman, Green Goblin 2(this time it's personal), and Venom. Keep it up and for Spider-man 6 you'll have to start crafting all new bad guys(You'll notice I didn't mention Green Goblin, well he was supposed to die, but we miss out on so many cool storylines for later if they keep killing off these bad guys).
As for everything else, it felt like this movie was two movies squashed together to be one film, there were really good plotlines that began in the first act that were non-existent in the third act. The Sandman in particular, with his daughter, who is doing all this for, simply decides in the end just to evaporate into the wind.....oh great, now your sick daughter will think her daddy has given up on her and taken off, smart move jerk. Oh, and the butler, that is all I'm going to say about that, the freaking butler.
It wasn't all a loss though, JJ Jameson was magical, as was Bruce Campbell. Seriously, I'd of rather of watched 2 and a half hours of those two on screen than the actual movie.
I ended up saying it was like 3 out of 10, especially when looked at next to the other two films, which handled everything perfectly, ok, well just the second one handled it perfectly, the first was alright. Anyway, that was my thoughts on it, not very inspiring, but I will say that you need to see it to form your own opinion, because I went with a mixed group, 3 couples, and all six of us had different things to say about it, and oddly, my opinion of the film wasn't as bad as one others in the group.
Peace.

Personally I think they are killing off the villians so that the movies will not go on forever like the comics and get dumber and dumber. But thats just my oppinion, and I was pretty disappointed to see the Doc and Venom kick the bucket. But all good things must come to an end. Especially story lines that involve killing captain America then resurrecting him (and you know they will)

Same here. They introduced Sandman, gave him a pretty good background, and then *poof* nothing but a couple fight sequences and an overly-sentimental exit.
And if Sam Raimi didn't like Venom so much, why the hell did he decide to sign up for this movie? What an ass, he wasted one of the coolest super villians ever. (My #1 is still Harley Quinn, Venom's second)
