Elfen Lied, hands down. Enthralled from the first episode till the final conclusion. Oh and it's not hentai, don't care what you say that's not its intent (all though it did help the story some).
However, if you've never seen or heard of it, I have to warn you, it is very violent and you need to be mature.
Pics (Examples of from the show, you've been warned (no nudity shown, some very well drawn artwork but do show some profanity...pity)).

Also, here's the theme song(s, one is the girl, other the saints). The song(s) have a haunting, dream-like melody that fleshs out the show extremely well.

Favorite is Dragon Half. Only 2 or 3 episodes of this one, but they were all freakin' hilarious.
Next up FLCL, following that is Kino's Journey, then Cowboy Bebop, after that is Princess Nine...need I go on?
I tend to like the more bizzare stuff, or the funny stuff. Not really into hentai.

Vision of Escaflowne
Bleach
Dragonball (when I was a kid growing up)
Ghost in the Shell
Trinity Blood
Balisk(sp?)
Samurai 7
Full Metal Alchemist
Cowboy Bebop
Hentai doesn't really do it for me, too much stuff that involves sex that I don't want to have done when I'm doing a girl... and once I found lolicon, I still feel dirty.

I never understood why these shows have become so largely popular. I mean, if they are good watch them, but it seems that people are consumed by them now.
Can someone explain to me why people find these so utterly facinating? I know someone who wears clothing from something she calls, "Naruto".

I don't get it either, but if there is a good story I'll watch it. The only think I figure is that people are either sheep or don't know a good cartoon (Like Batman, Pinky and the Brain, etc.). But like on this side on the ocean we have shitty shows that people still watch.

I don't even know what a good show is anymore. All I know is if I find an old Bugs or Mickey cartoon on TV, everything else becomes unimportant. That's were it all began folks, in a little steamboat or rabbit hole.

Spyder- For my husband and I, I think it is the art first and story second. Both are pretty up there, but it is amazing art to me. Plus, there are many things that movies still can't deliver like anime or animation. Well...CGI is starting to catch up I suppose, but I'll always love the anime. And the classics are fine and all, but don't hold a candle to the stuff you can get in anime. It's like saying you don't want a gun 'cause archery is where it began....

Trigun. Never seen a better combination of guns, big guns and bigger guns, humour, (dark and light), love and action come together any better. Love and Peace!
Love Hina. I welcome any light hearted approach to love, life and other catastrophes. Soap operas just aren't my thing. And the flying turtle is cute.
Neon Genesis though the ending can only be described as anti-climatic.
And finally, I loved Astroboy when growing up.

Its simple we don't have a life. We rather be in our own happy place.
I rather sit at home play WOW, watch anime, read a book, go on a hike, or bike ride, than go to a bar or club and meet/deal with people. I deal with people all day at work, so why do I want to do it at home too.

Why do people wear "NARUTO", "Anime", "WOW" or shrit with a logo? They like it.

Miyazaki's works...I have fond memories of Totoro.
Also, why has no one mentioned Ergo Proxy? That one had quite a bit of depth, good animation, and a well-brought plot.
And for the people who push for Naruto and Bleach...that's just the same thing as Pokemon. Your favorite anime will fall to cheap episodes meant to further the cause of capitalism. You will sacrifice quantity for quality, and be subjected to an eternal hell of "Quick, get higher spirit power! Okay, now defeat that guy! Right, you need more power again!".

I know what you are saying, most anime I've liked are just one season long and then there are the ones that just don't seem to stop. But then again in my town everyones (that feels like including anime in every sentence) favorite is DBZ and for as long as that series is it could be cut down to a good 5 hours if they took out all the grunts, groans, and standing around doing fuck all.

Berserk
Naruto
Bleach
Full Metal Alchemist
Neon Genesis Evangelion

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
Fate Stay Night
Hellsing
Trigun
Yuyu Hakusho
Are the top ones off the top of my head. Maybe I'll post some pictures later. I've noticed a theme. For the most part, much of the anime I watch in Japanese comes to Cartoon Network at some point or another. :-p Granted I don't think they'll ever get something like Berserk up there.

Fate Stay Night in a nutshell: great art. horrible animation. worst plot ever. Really; Saber was the star of the show. She's awesome. The King Arthur bit was terrible though; I was thinking Joan of Arc. And Shirou? The guy could give Luke Skywalker a run for his money on being a pansy.
"SEEEEEIIIII-BAH!"
Jeeze...Berserker couldn't even do the job right.
Another good character was Archer, and Gilgamesh, but nothing they did could have saved the anime. Worth a watch for good art, but beyond that, don't try. It'll make you cry inside.

The main reason I appreciate Fate Stay Night is that I did some Wikipedia research. Fate Stay Night is based off a video game with multiple storyline options. There are three installments of it. The storyline and possibilities are considerably more indepth for the game than the anime. Alone, it may not be as strong but a combination of the anime and game makes it worth while.
