It is just so blatantly obvious, that it boggles my mind as to how it could be doubted. It is pointless to point out the possibility of the otherwise simply based on minor technical contradictions (ever heard of a little thing called creativity, or artistic liberties?). So my goal for this thread is to put this matter to rest, and quell the incessant tide of "Troll or Orc? WoW or not? etc" threads.
Some oft-debated character specific points.
Cale is a BLOOD ELF HUNTER. Obviously not Beastmaster spec.
-"I don't care what the rest of my race has become, I will be the exception." On page 1. A reference to the legions of Alliance fanboys who are making Blood Elves (a horde race) who don't want to be labelled "evil". That's what the whole danged comic is about!
-Obviously not Beastmaster spec since he gets attacked by his own pet.
Richard is an UNDEAD WARLOCK. Obviously not Demonology spec.
-He USED to have an imp bound to him. Enough said.
-I'm not even going to get into the impalement and flaming arrow through the chest topic. He's undead. Laugh.
Krunch is a TAUREN WARRIOR.
-Not much really to say about him specifically. He's pretty straight forward. Not really sure what spec.
Benny is a PRIEST. Obviously not Holy spec.
-It has actually been debated wether or not she is a priest. That she might be a shaman and that priests don't have an instant resurrect ability (page 7) while another certain class does. Despite the constant references to her being a "priestess". Maybe the "ess" ending was throwing you off.
-Obviously not Holy spec from her reference to having not healed anyone in years, and her unconfidence in her ability to successfully resurrect Cale.
-Her race may not be specifically Troll or Orc for a reason. The creator of the comic probably find it easier to write a story for 4 main characters instead of 5. There are 5 Horde races, of which aside from Benny, 3 are accounted for. So rather than have to pick from Troll or Orc, she may have been left somewhere in the middle on purpose. This should also be a point against the "Will they add a 5th character to complete the group?" line of questioning.
Other random points I have noticed being debated.
"Mount So-And-So and Blah Blah City are not real places in WoW!"
-Duh. If I were to make a website, and publish a comic, and sell merchandise, I wouldn't want to directly borrow actual specifics and details from my source of inspiration either. Nobody likes to be sued.
"Warlocks cast shadow and fire magic, not ice!"
-You forgot Priests too. On page 17 her shield ability seems to freeze her attacker, although it could be a take on the Discipline spec Reflective Shield ability, which damages attackers. Earlier her shield was red, now it is blue and icy. Either she leveled up and put talent points into Reflective Shield, or the artist is just being creative. I vote for the latter. As for Richard freezing the dragon, my vote is for the writer needing a creative way for him to deal with the threat, and the old incineration schtick just doesn't have the panache of freezing it and having it shatter into a thousand pieces. Again, creativity.
"Warlocks can't rip people's skeletons out/create arrows with their minds!"
-Maybe he got the skeletons idea from Diablo 2's Necromancers. Or maybe just refer to the previous point about creative solutions. I'm pretty sure the mind arrows dealie was just put in for the joke. Or trinkets. Gotta love those crazy trinkets.
"Warriors can't smash rifts in the ground in WoW!"
-Simple reason for that. It's called game mechanics. Players are not meant to be able to physically change the landscape of the playing field. The writer just needed to move the story along people!
"Being Undead doesn't make you more resistant to damage! A hole in your chest would still kill you!"
-Last time I checked, Undead characters start off with higher than average stamina and spirit scores. Also, what good Undead gets offed by a simple hole in your chest? In character creation, you can make your character missing the bottom portion of your face, yet you can still talk. It's MAGIC!
"Aelloon this, Aelloon that..."
One error I will point out myself. In the bar, he demands the GOLD that Benny owes him. But later in the cave/mountain/whatever, Cale asks Benny what was it that Aelloon wants from her (yes, Cale is an idiot). She replies with "THE SWORD OF TRUTH!" Comon writer, get it together!
"The Sword of Truth this, The Sword of Truth that..."
I just thought it is worth pointing out that a popular episode of South Park which revolved around the characters playing WoW, featured an epic item called "The Sword of a Thousand Truths". It is not necessarily a "blatant rip-off from Terry Goodkind's novels". Could have been. Or not. It's a pretty generic name for a fabled sword. References to similarily named weapons are abound in fantasy stories and games.
"Is Sooba a male or female?"
-.....Are you kidding? Who the hell cares?!? How the hell did such a pointless thread get 12 pages long?!?
About the dozens of other pointless little technicalities and flames that are bound to follow this post.....
-The creator of the comic can make whomever he wants do whatever the hell he wants. That's his right. While it is obvious that this comic is heavily inspired by WoW, it is equally obvious that they did not want to create a direct WoW ripoff or tribute. Wether it be for legal or creative purposes, it doesn't matter. Feel free to flame me all you want (I can take it, just try not to be to blatantly ignorant), or post any questions/debates to my post or points that you see fit. I am a certified genius (yes, certified) with a touch of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, so I try not to argue without knowing what I'm talking about first. I can be wrong. But I'm far more often right.
p.s. I've been up all night by the time I wrote this post. If I left anything out, let me know. I'm tired, forgive me.
