Ok, in honor of Halloween and the upcoming Wolfman movie, I thought I'd start a thread devoted to that specific creature in multimedia.
What are your favorites, or which ones would you watch only if there was MST3K commentary?

Hmm, let's see...
Love:
Ginger Snaps
Cursed - It was that lulzy movie where the kid and his sister get bitten. The brother is releasing pheromones that make the boy who bullied him fall for him. I love that movie more than I should.
An American Werewolf in London/Paris - I actually prefer the Paris one, believe it or not.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV Show) - Oz. I love Seth Green something fierce.
Big Wolf On Campus (TV Show) - Does anyone remember this show? I had such a crush on the goth dork.
Hate:
Twilight.

Teen Wolf was good as a comedy involving the werewolf, and it's always nice to see Michael J. Fox.
But the only serious werewolf movie I've seen was An American Werewolf in London, and I was amazed at how they actually showed the transformation without any of the computer enhancement we might think as necessary for the feat.

Muy favorite Werewolves are werewolves of folklore, particularly Slavic folklore. Those Werewolves weren't turned by bites (if a Slavic werewolf bit you he wouldn't stop there, there'd be nothing left to turn into a werewolf

)instead they were created by being cursed by witches or from drinking water from a wolf's footprint.

As I recall, the earliest myths on werewolves were supposed to be punishments from the gods for cannibalism.

Lots of different cultures have different stories about changelings. What you describe sounds more like the Wendigo of Algonquian folklore.

Consulting my Big Book-O-Mythology, "Lycaon, the Werewolf".
An ancient greek myth where King Lycaon killed a prisoner and attempted to serve him to a guest that happened to be Zeus in disguise. Lycaon ate as well to further the deception. Zeus, disgusted, destroyed the king's palace and sent him on the run into the countryside. As he ran the man's form was changed into that of a wolf. It is from his name that we get the word "Lycanthrope".
Methinks the wendigo is not alone in its message. Though, to be fair, my book says that in places where wolves are not common, the people will substitute them for some other form of animal.

Not exactly that uncommon in Greek myth for men to be turned into Animals. That may be where the term Lycan comes from but when you think werewolves Greek myth isn't that important to their mythos.
Primarily modern werewolves come from Slavic myth and Medieval European superstition.

Granted, but I believe the other myths would have evolved out of that one. What was originally seen as a punishment doled out by the greek gods became a curse that could come from varying circumstances.

Changelings are almost as widespread as Dragons in myth. The Slavic peoples had no real contact with the Greeks and they developed the myths that would later spread into Central Europe and from there to Western Europe.

I have a hard time believing the Slavs wouldn't have come across men by the name of Alexander or Ceaser.
In any case, we're getting off topic, and I shan't further this discussion.

..you haven't gone entirely off topic, still talking about werewolf myths sort of.

The topic is werewolves so if we're discussing the myths behind them I don't see how that's off topic. And yes, the Slavs never came into contact with either of those people. The Slavs are from North Eastern Europe, an area that was completely unknown to the Hellenic and Roman World.
In any case I'm not too excited by the new Wolfman movie, it looks kinda bad.

The subtitle of the topic is movies and TV. We've been going back and forth on where the myths come from.

Yes but the TOPIC is Werewolves, so lets expand it to werewolf stuff in general. Why limit the subject of conversation so much?

Favourites;
Dog Soldiers - Must see movie.
Underworld - Hit & miss. Transformations are good, Lycans look different than is to be expected.
Van Helsing (Different, in their own unique way.)
The upcoming 'Wolfman' Remake. Looks amazing, can't wait to get my arse in that cinema seat.
Hates;
Harry Potter - I'm praying they don't show any more of those pathetic Bone-Bags.
Twilight - Enough Said.
Howling - Neandetharl meets Ball of Hair. Only good thing about them is the Transformations.
Ginger Snaps - Meh, looks good, but the idea of a Werewolf going through a Sexual Puberty? Nuh uh.

Yeah, I didn't like Twilight much, either; the only part of the movie I liked was at the beginning: the vampire hunting the deer.
I've been planning on renting Dog Soldiers; I kept missing it when it aired on SciFi / Syfy; that looked cool.

There was a show, Werewolf, that aired for awhile when I was a kid (in the long-ago 1980s

). It follows the adventures of a guy trying to track down the werewolf who cursed him, and/or find a 'cure'. I heard about a month ago that it was coming out this week on dvd, but couldn't find it in stores today. I found out why after an internet search. Turns out, a couple week ago, two of the musicians (who are so far un-named) refused at the last minute to release rights to one or two songs that played during an episode's dialog. So, the show's rights were given back to Sony.

(Enough ranting for now, I'll have to post again once I've collected my thoughts.)
