About the monochrome panels; haven't any of you kids been out in the country at night, without artificial lights?
This is what the world looks like in moonlight (probably a full moon judging by the brightness). It's light, but no real colour except blue-grey and black shadows.
Both Cale and Benny are very serious about their duties, so I think their romance will be present, but in the background. Even if they become lovers, both will still put their main focus on getting to Kethencia with their people and allies in one piece.
Sex and romance doesn't automatically make people stupid or incapable of thinking of something else, that's just something (bad) writers tend to put in the script because they can't write real characters, just clichés.
That said, I wasn't surprised over this. I've seen Benny gradually coming to respect and like Cale over the months they've been traveling together.
I'd also would like to thank Sohmer and Lar for handling that very well. It's been a gradual thing over a fairly long period of time, not throwing them together just to have a romance. This way it's much more realistic and makes Benny much more like a real person/depth as a character.
It's interesting to note that this intimacy is two-fold. One the one hand, Benny is helping her liege lord relieve the crushing burden (of both responsibility and guilt) he's under, but it is also an acknowledgment of her feelings for Cale as well as healing for herself.
The death of her former fiancé obviously hit her hard, and this is the first time (as far as we know anyway) that she lets herself feel and be intimate with someone again.
Whether she likes some kinky play in the lovesharing with her partner is still an open question.
The reason she entangled Cale with those branches was more so he would not run away, or try to break free, because he probably wouldn't accept (at first) it if she just propositioned it.
Since she's still (probably) a bit uncertain to strike up an intimate relationship with someone again, this not only stopped Cale from running away, it also let her be in control and take things along at a pace she's comfortable with.
Cale doesn't seem to like it to me. He seems more uncertain in the next to last panel, though he seems to cave in quickly in the last, so maybe he has been having low-key or repressed feelings for her as well.
Heh, and they will probably get ribbed a bit over their relationship by Richard and Krunch (or Ray'd), but like I said before, I think the romance will take a backseat to the adventure. It's there in the background but the focus is still on the main story.
I'm also very interested in how Pella will react, and if she will see Benny as a rival, or thank her for mellowing Cale out towards her (because I think Cale will go easier on Pella, maybe even apologize after Benny is done with him).
Oh, and the bit about Richard acting it out with the Fork of Truth as Cale was quite funny.

This. Romance is likened to failure of entertainment because BAD writers put it in when the show/comic/book starts getting weak, or because it's expected. Sohmer put this in at a point in which is, arguably, the strongest so far. He knows what the hell he's doing.
And to all those that said "predictable", yes, if you expect anything, everything is predictable. Yeah, it was coming eventually, but no one could have predicted it would be now. You were surprised, admit it!
With that said....
