From the artistic viewpoint: Pages #289 and 290 gave us some nice motion studies of Cale. Well done.

From the fanpoint: Pages #289 and #290 (and #272 and #273, too) gave us Cale-fans some blatant fanservice. Shame on you, La and Sohmer, shame on you.

(Although like so many pale-skinned men, Cale looks better with his clothes on than in just a loincloth.)

I see Cale is still prone to prancing around the place with his shirt off while showing off his weapons. Must be some sort of Stoic Male Warrior mating cry thing.

I'm half-afraid this is a dream sequence (the question is, Cale's or Benny's?), although I hope it isn't. I'm long past the (teen)age where I liked the will-they-or-won't-they-confess-their-love tiptoeing around with extra added Comedic Misunderstandings you get in your standard romance comedy.

As for further romance, I doubt it will kill the series. If these two can take the story for 300 pages WITHOUT a kiss, I doubt they will be muck up their series (ala the end of Moonlighting) by killing the tension. It's the sexual tension that keeps it all in play. The moment main characters have sex, it seems to go downhill from there.

So far there's been enough tension to play a violin with, so we shall see!

something i noticed is that everyone now says Cale is "EVIL". i don't think so, he has just become stronger and has lost the "lets go save good people because im a good person" attitude. and just because Richard wasn't in the last few pages doesn't mean we cant say that we need him, overall Cale not evil just more BA

Hate to say it, but I have to agree. I've never been a fan of romantic stories. On-screen love tends to make things needlessly complicated. I never thought a girl like Benny would go for a guy like Cale. If anything, I thought Pella might fall for him.

...On the other hand that might still be true. A plot twist where Pella and Benny have a falling out over Cale's affections? I sincerely hope not. >_<

I never thought he had turned evil, just that he had lost his innocence. I kinda miss his wide-eyed enthusiasm in dangerous moments though.

What he IS is world-weary. Which takes the humor down a notch. But we have Richard to bring it back up again! GO RICHARD!

because frankly, i didn´t see much between benny and cale, but i appreciate it anyway, the way it is handled here. as someone said, it looks like it is benny who´s changing quite a bit here, she´s obviously impressed by cale´s development from naive goody-two-shoes to a real leader and knight, so to speak. she used to be part of that cynical no-morals, no-worries posse, but since the story has taken on a more serious tone, there are deeper undercurrents to all the fun and games. hell, even richard, master of mayhem, has a "destiny" now!
plus cale rellay deserves some happiness after all the bashings he´s been through.
question is: will this be a one-shot? or the start of a relationship? if the latter, how will it work?
only time (and sohlar) will tell ...
so, while i didn´t expect this to happen at this point, i´m glad it did.
plus, i´m a girl, i´m allowed to like romance for romance´s sake...

Maybe its the fact that i just read all of them and have a clearer picture of the whole storyline but I'm still surprised everyone is talking conscience instead of guilt.

It's his burden of guilt that he carries. His sense of self is rooted in his conscience. Without it he /isn't/ cale and that's what Benny has been uplifted from back to her roots gained by being raised by krunch. She was raised in an honorable moral fashion and as someone else put it "she lost faith in humanity" somewhere along the road.

I greatly appreciate the way this comic has matured over time. I started reading it because someone recommended it. I continued past the first volume because it was hilarious. I devoured the entire second half in a single afternoon because the storyline rapidly became AMAZING...and now I'm kicking myself because now I'm tormented by the waiting. (just like with George RR Martin's a song of fire and ice...damnit...give me my Dance with Dragons!)

Also...this isn't fricking DND! entangling roots? who the hell cares? its a god damn parody! ...also...i ... loathe...dnd...there...i said it...i loathe 4.0 most of all... (avid table top roleplayer here )

I know people have been predicting this sort of thing for-freaking-EVER, but I'd tended to ignore it. I guess I just figured that for one reason or another, any chemistry or action between Cale and Benny wouldn't happen... Those of you that firmly stood by that belief... you deserve cookies.

I don't see why some of you are so damn skiddish about it. You're worried that the current dynamic might change horribly? I guess its just me but I'll take well-rounded story-telling over a string of banal Richard jokes.
Oh and yes its at night its not a dream. Apparently Lar draws night scenes similar to how they used to film them in old movies: with a darker lens.

I personally preferred Benny lezzing out with Pella and some friggin' pillows!

I wonder how Krunch will react. Maybe he'll see it as his fatherly duty to kick Cale's ass. Like in the Episode of That 70's Show were Eric and Donna finally slept with each other and Bob kicked Eric's ass.

This is my first post here ever. I literally registered on this forum just to say... WHOA MOMMA!

As I wrote in my e-mail to Mr Sohmer, I did NOT see that coming. But I loved it, because it was totally non-corny and the build-up to it was very subtle throughout the comic , if there was any (I felt a vibe).

As to those who might think that now the comic is gonna get corny due to the romance... Well, who's to say this one kiss is going to turn into a full blown romance? Maybe it was just a bit of action. People on the road get needy. Or maybe the creators are gonna put a spin on it and turn it into another source of comic relief, you never know. Hehe, anyway, all the more reason to keep reading and find out how this develops. Ryan Sohmer, and Lar DeSouza, you sly dogs you! You know just how to hook us...

The naysayers don't really know what they're talking about. Romance is a necessary facet of drama (and comedy) and without it sooner or later things get dull. Sohmer has added another dimension of storytelling now and I think that's a damn good thing and well overdue.

Have to say, i expected this, but definitely not yet. In the gnome's mountain, Benny said that she "trusts the elf". And krunch said it's a far cry of what she thought of him. But this is a even further cry from trusting him.

Finally registered because I had to comment on this thread. I completely agreed with this theory, and I'm surprised no one mentioned it in the past pages. Yes, I read all the previous pages of this thread to hear people out. It's already been established that Benny sees Cale as the king, and she has pretty much sworn her loyality to him. As a servant to the king, she is offering her body to help her confused and frustrated lord. It's basic feudalism to me. I really haven't sensed anything romantic in this comic that was concrete, not that I'm against romance. I just don't see any in the page. Benny looks more like a mistress of convience to me.

That could be my inner Benny fanboy talking though, just to worn you. Props to Lars and Sohmer though. This was a great page. I can't wait for Monday.

I doubt its just a passing fling, Benny was going to marry that one guy, Say'l but shit happened and he ended up dead. She's probably much more emotionally needy than Cale is and if she's going to do this I doubt its just her trying to comfort him. She needs comfort too.
