Cats aren't really domesticated. Dogs are ok, but everyone has a dog and their either so big that they cause trouble, or are lap dogs, and thus more cute than cool.

Silver Foxes, though, that's where its at.

I am going everywhere I can to ask people if they have heard anything involving purchasing these wonderful animals. My primary reason is that their awesome. My secondary reason (the one I found out about just a few minutes ago) is that the current use is to sell them for pelts. That doesn't sit well with me. I'm not a big animal rights person, but domesticating an animal and breeding it to be friendly, like a dog, and then killing it and skinning it, does NOT sit well with me.

Help me find them plz.

Fishing cats are where its at.wink.gif

If there are only seven hundred of them, the odds that you can get one are very small

Awwwwwww

Those are just so adorable. I hope you find one.

Depending on where you live, there may be laws against owning one, or laws that just make it a pain in the ass to own one. It may say "domesticated" up there, but legally it'll still be considered a wild animal.

More than likely you would have to obtain some sort of animal handlers permit, its the same kind of permit you would need in order to own, say a white tiger. As for the laws in your area, the person who could most likely tell you the most is your local Game Warden. Now all you need to do is come up with the cash for the permit and to buy the cute little bugger. Good luck!

If it weren't for what their doing now, this could actually be a good thing. Some animals, like the fox, could easily die out if they aren't domesticated. Further more, domestication allows them to be in captivity better, meaning that, in certain long term goals, they could be more succesful in more enviroments. And this 'experiment' is even less an experiment and more the act of evolution in process like with dogs, cats, livestock, rabits, and a great variaty of other animals that we take for granted.

I think its wonderful.

I'm sorry. The science buff in me is taking over.

That has got to be in the top 5 most ignorant statements concerning science this summer.

You can't just leave something alone. We practice eugenics every day, wheather we know it or not. Breeding is eugenics. And truly and honestly, the thing that makes mankind what they are is their desire and capacity to 'play god'. We have meddled in the genetics and breeding of animals for our entire existance. From the first wold wich was tamed to this most recent experiment, it is what we do. Mankind is often said to be capable of changing the face of the planet, that our ability to adapt is what makes us powerful, but it is instead our ability to adapt other things to our desires, and that started with animals.

This is nothing new.

Ok, sorry about that. Doubt you meant any harm, but I just had to correct you. Its an impulse.

soo... what your trying to say is.. you think they should be left alone too right XD?!

Actually, I think what he's saying is that we've never just left it alone, so why start now? wink.gif

I'll bring up the same question I use for vegetarians who frown on those who eat cow. How long do you think a cow would last in the wild? For that matter, I ask the same about the daschund (weiner dog) or the chihuahua. These are not animals that came about naturally and survived in their original niches in the wild. We made them into what they are over many, many years.

To frown on recent practices of this is somewhat hypocritical.

sigh.
vegetarianism is different...
for example some dont eat it because its cruel to animals...

to be honest i dont really care but i wont share my excitement for the killing or breeding of animals

They ARE cute.

Still, it takes a long time for a wild animal to become completely domesticated. Cows, dogs, etc...That said, there's no reason to believe that anything cruel is happening here. No one things keeping a dog as a pet is cruel. O_o I suppose you could argue that it's animal experimentation...but...REALISTICALLY...experiments have to be done on SOMETHING for the sake of progress, and it would be quite a stretch to suggest that humans would be an acceptable alternative. XD
