Hey all. I know you all see me lurking about the interwebs, but I kinda need some help. As a writer, I hit a rough bump. I realized that no matter what, I can't use a villain-based deity made by someone else. I mean, come on, look at H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu! How can I compete with him? And Sauron by J.R.R. Tolkien! See? The old writers slaughtered everything that was acceptable as an original villain. So? I was thinking, grab the base of these guys and form them together. This is a godly act, in a paradoxical sense. I'll get into that later... Anyway, I am looking for people who can assist me in this.
I am looking for a villain in a D&D based world called "Ranaamar" Here's the thing, my novel I am TRYING to work on isn't moving because of this small thing. A huge asset when it nears it main goal. Sooooo...
What kind of creature gives a sense of dread and misery? That's the main question. Any ideas?

Make him something... Well, I'm always stunned when that nice guy in the bar is actually the villain. Yeah, I should expect it by now but it's usually a shock anyway.

base him on a normal creature - like a snake or a toad or a rat. nasty creatures, not like a fluffy bunny. Voldy is based on a snake. =] that reminds me... how come all or most villains are undead/immortal? think... Voldemort [immortal unless you get rid of the Horocruxes], Richard [undead], that evil guy in Inkspell [immortal unless you write in his book, Torak [immortal cause he's a god], DomDaniel [immortal because of the Two-Faced Ring]... there are more but I can't remember them atm.

Assasins with weird stuff as weapons always do great.
Or perhaps a big ass Ogre, with one eye and lot's of crazy minions.
Or base him on something that LOOKS completly harmless. Like a clown (*Cough* IT and The Joker*Cough*)

Well
Dread is based off snakes and hornets. That's a good starting place, mostly because humans, as primates, have a primal fear of serpents. It's something written into our genetic code.
Another idea is centipedes, because those are fucking creepy. Maybe like, a centipede made of human bones with the head of a viper.

Use this.
The upper body of a normal lizard man grafted onto a giant scorpion's body. Dread and misery.

A man-shaped being made entirely from live earthworms. Individual earthworms, all clustered together to form something only in the semblance of a man, writhing about in their squishy mass.

Clowns have never, ever looked harmless.

I've always had a feeling of extreme revulsion about cockroaches. It didn't help when I crashed on a friend's couch a few years ago. I woke up during the night, and discovered one sitting on my face, looking directly into my eye. I was afraid to scream, because I knew if I did, and it fell into my mouth, I would have a heart attack, or go catatonic.

Base it of the of the more morally gray accounts of God in the Old Testament. It is really disturbing when one discovers that a seemingly benevolent God approves of genocide, intolerance and the ruination of a man's life for a bet, amongst other things.
