ITs all in the title, the question came up in another topic, and now i gotta know.
What instrument would be able to make a sound similar to a Richard Fwoosh?

You could probably synth it on an electric keyboard.

I dunno really but I play the flute and for some time now I have been trying to write a theme for Richard....and the instrument just doesn't fit.
Any ideas?

I'm thinking an eleectric guitar with distortion and a wah-pedal.
Start off a power chord high on the fret board with high wah, quickly slide it down to a deep roar on both fret and wah-pedal. Should give a high-pitched starting sound, settling into a deeper, rumbling sort of dramatic sound. Kinda like an intimidating growl of a large ferocious beast, just waiting to be unleashed to cause havoc and singed whiskers.
For a gradual build-up, I'd say start at 15th or 18th fret, then slide-jump a diminished third down the fret till an open power chord is reached. To add in a bit of the fluctuation of fire, I'd say give the bender grip a go.

I would imagine the noise is very much akin to that of sudden fire, such as an explosion. That sort of low (by tone, not necessarily volume) hiss/whisper/quiet thunder-like noise of air being consumed/displaced. If you don't know what I'm talking about, make a bonfire and listen.
Match that, and there you go.

Just throw a flamethrower in the mix.
Set it off at the proper time...instant FWOOSH!
Make sure nothings in the way though.

Go to a glass studio and record the noise a glass torch makes while lit, and crank up the oxygen. Preferably a Nortel or a Hot Head (or any large glass torch that isn't a GTT torch, because they're quiet and don't hiss as much).
Best thing to make fwoosh noises is something that actually fwooshes.

All awsome ideas, but sadly, none of them are actual musical Instruments

Maybe if you blow through a didgeridoo wrong really hard. That's an instrument.
Some sort of shaker thing might work to. Or one of those rain stick things, but faster. And prolly quieter, either way.

Drums, if you did them right.
Maybe throw in some electric guitar distortion.
I actually had to sit here and think about it for a few minutes XD

If you are looking for a musical instrument to make a fwoosh, squeezing an accordion without any keys pressed would do nicely, I think.
On the other hand, if you really want a Richard sound effect a can of WD-40 and a lighter spring to mind. Of course, that's a dangerous and stupid thing to do, and you could seriously injure yourself. Always remember: pyromania may be fun, but could lead to early revocation of your breathing privileges.

In Joe Satriani's "Surfing with the Alien" the sound of the "surfing" sure sounds like fwoosh to me!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eYmIHed7xI...feature=related1:08 is the first one, but it's in the song at a few places.
There's a rapid fire fwoosh at 2:34 ...
Totally sounds like Richard's Fwoosh to me!

Maybe you can use that thing that is like aluminum foil on wood that people use to make thunder sound effects and hit it a certain way *shrugs*

yes I do.
Why do you have a Digeridoo?!
Numerous reasons.
1. I love unique and exotic instruments ( i have a few more wierd instruments, including a Clazika.)
2. I am half Auzzi, so its in my blood

I was going to say any instrument so long as it is on fire.
Seriously, I think the sound is meant to be like the sound you first get when you light a gas ring from a few cm too far away. But don't play with fire unless you're qualified or else don't blame me for any results etc etc

I have been playing the trumpet for... eight years now i believe, and a simple strong and fast burst of air though the thing would give a good fwoosh sound i think... hmm i think ill give that a try haha
edit: ok i tried it and im not quite satisfied.. the sound i got was too high pitched to fit richand, try a deeper brass insturment though, maybe a trombone, or susaphone

Maybe if you attached a trumpet to a gas bottle and played a note toward a flame...
No, bad idea.
