I rarely, if ever, pimp the site I heavily volunteer for, but with the new thing we have going on and a contest that will be starting here shortly, I figure I will this time.

I'll use this thread for our updates, but wanted to throw today's updates out there because I figure this is what you guys would be most interested in (Top article, not bottom in this case but still):

Deceived Cinematic SWKOTR Trailer at E3
First we have posted the highly anticipated trailer from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic that was shown yesterday at E3. The trailer is too epic for words, so all I can say is go here and watch it: http://sci-fi.eogamer.com/wp/?p=116

Meet the Squad: Scorpio Research Institute
This is our first in a series of interviews with Squads planning to participate in Jumpgate: Evolution. Check it out here: http://sci-fi.eogamer.com/wp/?p=124

Thanks and happy reading!

KotOR 3 huh? Sexy =O
Kayhynn
No. KOTR ONLINE. It's gonna be an MMO.
HerSevvyBear
Much less sexy. Not sexy at all.

I was hoping they'd give up on that back in '05 when the rumors started. I don't want an MMO, I want more Revan.
MantaLord
But I've already been using the Gamer Thread for E3 updates... Not like anybody goes there besides me and Ryan, but...
niarBaD
Manta >.> Why do you keep calling me Ryan. That's not my name.

The website looks interesting Kay, i'll keep an eye on it occasionally.
Kayhynn
This won't necessarily be just for E3 updates, more for the Sci-Fi month portal updates.

Venine
Well, either way, SW:KOTR looks worthy of a trial attempt as I said in the Gamer thread.

That said, I agree with some comments about the trailer being baised towards the Sith (understandable, despite the PoS that 'Revenge of the Sith' was as a film) but still, if combat's that intense, then hell, I wouldn't mind giving it a go.

That & I've always wanted to try out a Star Wars MMO but have never really been all that interested in any of the games, Battlefront 1 & 2 aside, and yes ok, Empire at War too...
Kayhynn
Star Wars Galaxies was great till they dumbed it down then let everyone start off with "classes" and allowed Jedi to be a starting class.

My rant on that would be very long and not nice.

It would be wonderful if they could just abandon this and go kill that game more.
euology
I saw that trailer earlier today. Looks really really good. I'm a fan of Bioware as game developers too, just hope they finally dropped the NWN type engine builds that was so 7 years ago.

The most recent article for this month is up, titled "2009: The Year of Sci-Fi MMOs or Sci-Fi Woes?" This discusses four titles set to be released in 2009.

The article can be found here: http://sci-fi.eogamer.com/wp/?p=134

Arrgh! I'm so sorry... It's that the "niar" in your name makes me think of "Ryannayr" whenever I see you. I'm probably dyslexic or something...

For the KotR I loved what I saw, and I think its the only real push Lucasarts can make against wow. Wow has made Blizzard a super power if they werent already and since Lucasarts pretty much is already, this could push em over the top. First thing I'm doin when it comes out is making an assassin. What I'm really hopin for is that the HK's could be a sith class, but that might be hopin too much. Big factor I wanna see them do is make the environments destructible like in the trailer. But neways I digest, and will look forward to the new Family Guy movie "Something Something Something...Darkside" coming soon till then.
Zoran
I've been waiting for this to come out, what I need to do now is buy a stronger computer before it comes out. I've been looking for a new MMO away from WoW, and as being a huge star wars geek myself. I'll give into the Light/Dark side and do what I can to have fun starting an MMORPG, I miss it so.

SWKOTOR will be crap.... the combat is the boring RTS style point and click combat from WoW... which fails for Star Wars... Star Wars needs hardcore action combat... like an action game.... not that crappy stuff... give me combat from Lego Star Wars, Fable II, Gears of War 2, then Ill be happy... no Jedi would stand in one spot and swing his saber around.... boo, cuz KOTOR is really cool....

As though this is just from your opinion, and you must see KOTOR(1&2) are simple RPGs that station themselves on just the story line, I say its a pretty awesome game to be able to interact with the NPCs in an almost human way. Like to meet three jedi masters, and on what you say could be either killing them, making piece with them, hugging them, pinching their nose, or even going to a Lord of the Rings tavern (Prancing Pony) and taking a drink. It's just that interesting. The combat I'll agree isn't fantastic, but it's interesting enough to get you going threw it. The MMO of Kotor is still being made and hopefully soon this winter to have a spit shine on it. I'll judge the game THEN when I am able to actually try it out. And on another thought, I don't think Jedi will be the only class, maybe Soldier, Scoundrel, Droid even. But lets see all we can before going "Suxors."

But your more of the high speed action junky I'm guessing, in which I direct you to the Jedi Knights series. (Jedi Knights Jedi Academy is my personal favorite)

All of those are very important to KOTOR, and are a huge plus to the series, but Star Wars (especially with Jedi) isnt Star Wars without crazy saberplay and force acrobatics....

Action is great, but I need a powerful story in my games, thats why Ive always liked KOTOR... but without awesome combat, the storyline kind of lacks shine... especially now that making an action RPG is easy... before, an MMO with action combat would have been impossible... but not anymore, so now action combat is kind of a need...

A focus on storyline will just make this game a slightly different reiteration on every other MMO, this game wont succeed unless it completely rethinks the MMO genre... it needs good story AND good combat... the exploration is already there... it also needs awesome character customization and creation.... if all it has is story, it will fail..

This is mostly why I want combat, Im sick of the mediocre WoW dominating a genre that I would otherwise love... making action combat is not hard, and neither is an awesome world (Star Wars....) and awesome characters... and the story wont be hard either...

Combat that actually looks like Star Wars combat, action combat, and awesome character customization will make this game the game that Ive always dreamed of playing... and it will be pushed to the side of the way by WoW if it doesnt revolutionize the budding genre to bring back the ideas people had when they first though of making an online world...

Don't you ever say something like that. I'd rather not go into detail, but that is the worst idea Lucasarts has ever had.

I suggest you go into detail cause I don't see why everyone is complaining. Oh, and I better slap ya for tellin' me what I better not say! Canada tells me that.

Bish, pleez.

KotOR is win.

MMOs are fail.

Pollute a pool of win with even the tiniest bit of fail, and you get well... whatever the name of the Matrix mmo was. Or is. Who really cares?
Zoran
If it gets turned into a MMO and you don't like the MMO, don't play the god damn MMO. It's that simple, just go back and play the single player games. If people complain about something they don't play, then I don't see how they have any right to yell and bitch about it. If you sit there and say "I'm not gonna play Kotor 1/2 just cause the third installment got turned into an MMO." It's like yelling at Final fantasy 11 being turned into a MMO." Which was really quite good for a grind fest, to me anyway. But I learn to have FUN with it, and not rely on what it is to have fun.

On that note, why don't people have fun anymore D:

If they make KotOR 3 into an MMO, they won't bother with continuing the story. If they do, it won't have much of an effect. After all, who plays an MMO for the story? Finish the story, then make an MMO if you want money that bad.

I'm talking about it being a game mate, not the story.

On the story side, I think it should have a conclusion.
HerSevvyBear
I know. But the story is more important than the game.

At the very least release a book or something. Then make an MMO. Not before.
Kayhynn
I think there is slight confusion here. This isn't KOTOR 3. This is totally different.

And obviously you are against MMOs, so I do believe that makes you a wee bit biased against it in general.

They did a good job till the unmentionable changes with post NGE happened in Star Wars Galaxies. I think KOTOR Online will allow for more expansion and a freer storyline.

And now for today's news

Phantasy Star of Yesteryear: The First Console MMO
Written by ThreeDog: "To celebrate Sci-Fi month, I found myself reminiscing about the titles of the past I have played. The first game that popped into my head was a very important one, if only for history’s sake. Let’s rewind back to the year 2000, and take a look at the widely credited first console MMO, Phantasy Star Online. To do this, we need to take a brief look at the series that spawned it as well as the console that it was initially released for, the Sega Dreamcast."
