Yeah, I don't think he'll become the big-bad. It just seems to easy. Richard is to Laissez-fwoosh to try to actually take over the world.
Heh, "Laissez-fwoosh."
On that note... I dunno. I really don't see Richard as having any interest in taking things over. He seems to be more the sort to like personal power (like his personal aptitude for magics) than power and governing. Sure, he's the mayor of Pretty Pretty Unicorn village, but it's not like we've seen him spend much time there. The only time he seemed to have any interest in returning to the village was when his source of power was threatened. He likes having titles for the sake of having titles, not because he has any real interest in fulfilling the responsibilities associated with those titles.
Besides, how would betraying Cale and the others do anything good for his boredom? If he's following the gang out of boredom, as he says, then simply killing them and everything else in his path just sets him up for more boredom in the long run. He likes to kill things, yes, but he seems to have gotten to a point where killing things in terrible, macabre, and hilarious ways has become routine. Following the same old routine you've been following for however long you've been undead isn't really the best way to alleviate your boredom. And seriously...since he's been with Cale and the others (the Sooby-Gang?), Richard has already: pissed off the Legion several times; found a constant source of amusement in Cale himself; been temporarily enlisted in a Gnome army; found a mythical City of Justice; gone back in time in said City of Justice; been transformed into a cute, childlike form; committed an act of selflessness in said childlike form; been trapped in the Plane of Suck; endured a trial set up by lesser demons; been involved in a war for the North; and admitted that he has gained a destiny. We don't know what his life was like before Cale, but it seems like it's been pretty interesting since!
And really...if he was going to try to take over Kethenicia, I would imagine he'd want to store his source of power far away from a site of battle as possible.
My 2c.
