A pony is actually a small, but fully grown, horse. A baby horse is called a foal. I think Richard was merely being facetious with his cry of "For Pony!" and trying, as usual, to make the entire quest into a big joke. He performs admirably at this task, but I suspect that the name "Pretty Pretty Unicorn" had not even been thought of at the time that Richard came up with his battlecry.

Likely the Case

I would not be too suprised if the village hadn't been called Pretty, pretty unicorn until that very moment when Richard decided it would be funny to tell the missionary that.

I agree, although it be awesome to see "Pony" turn out to be something largely redundant
