What is a thong?

Well, "thongs" are flip-flop-style footwear. The key part to thongs is the part that goes between the toes - if they don't have that, they're not thongs.

A thong (singular) is underwear that doesn't have any buttcheek covers. It's a string between the cheeks attached to a small triangle of fabric for the front and underside, with strings on the sides holding the whole thing in place.
The original idea behind thong underwear was to prevent those unsightly panty lines.

So, it's basically "asscrack undies".

Well, I had to answer in a smartass fashion due to a discussion years ago.
I was working the floor at a department store, and we were going over the dress code in the break room. The dress code said "no thongs". It was under the section regarding proper footwear, and I worked in the shoe department, so I instantly knew to what it was referring. Apparently no one else understood the intent, and they were kicking up a shitstorm about how "This company doesn't have the right to tell me what kind of underpants I can wear, no one's going to see them!!!"
Once I got them calmed down and told them what it meant in context, they all had a good laugh.

I have to say I'd go for the subtle reference if I created a Richard thong...it would be black, with a red gem in the centre, and when one night someone says "Isn't that Richard's Gem?" Then I'd know he was THE ONE. lol.
