I've been around the site a few times, used the search function, and checked other game threads. Nothing on MUDs.

So, I was just curious. Does anyone else play on one? Know of them? Personally, I enjoy playing once or twice a day. It's a fun way to end a night. Especially 'cause it makes you read, which in turn makes your brain do some work for once.

I play on Mozart Mud. I have been for a long time now, but my first character was deleted after a month of inactivity, (I actually had about six months), and now I'm starting over! It's still just as fun as it was when I left.

So, that about wraps up my introduction to this topic.

Has anyone else played one? Read up on them? Heard of them? If so, feel free to discuss.

Used to play MUD's back in the day, you know on the prodigy network in like 93'. Haven't MUD'd in a very very long time tho.

Edit: Mozart mud sounds familiar tho. .... is it telnet? Don't know if i have telnet abilities at work, think they blocked it.

I used to play DSL (Dark and Shattered Lands), and used Zmud to play, it was based on D&D style, and it was alright. My friend got into it a bit more then I did. Pretty fun Mud.

There was also Gemstone III, which I played on Prodigy, and I believe it's progressed to Gemstone 4 (same game, they just add more storlines and locations). That one was just very intensive and a pretty tight knit community. They toned down a bit of the chaos though, and I think that took away some of the finer aspects.

But they had an implemented injury system that was phenominal. You would build wounds to areas that were hit (and could aim for areas). Rogues being very good at aiming, while a giantman warrior would be fairly lousy at it, but could hit amazingly strong, and weapons did different type of damage and such.

Like a dagger that hit the eye was likely to blind the person, if it was a great hit, it would likely hit their brain and kill them instantly, while a light sword swing might glance and cut above the eye, while a massive two handed would slice through the scalp, brain, and skull, scalping the person.

And injuries effected your gameplay. If you're nervous system was shot, you had to find healing since skinning and searching creatures would be impossible without your system working properly.

People missing an arm can't swing (or block depending), if you're missing a leg, you're liable to be knocked over and have a difficult time getting up. It was fantastic! Though I don't think they could apply this to a graphical game, it'd be incredibly gory, and near impossible to develop.

I played Aardwolf a bit, but I lost interest pretty quick... It was fun, but I have a very poor imagination. I've been working on it, but I can still barely visualize things at all, about just enough to get by on.

I was also rather antisocial... as I tend to be on anything that doesn't pretty much force social interaction.

I'm more one for freestyle forum RPs.

I will only play a MUD if it is based on DND and the such.

Yeah, as far as I know Mozart Mud is telnet. It's been around since the 90's if I recall correctly. I've been playing for around four years on and off.

Wow, that in-depth? That sounds like something I might just have to look into sometime.

Yeah, I know what you mean about the free-style forum Role-Playing. I tend to enjoy something I can read at my own pace, but MUDs are good at building that skill up over time. Also, anti-social on a MUD gets you nowhere, fast. Hah, I tried that and ended up hitting several Deathtraps and losing most of my gear within the first week.

As far as I know, all of the decently populated ones are of that make.

The level of "Indepth" for Gemstone is... phenominal. They have weight factor (how much you carry vs strength dexterity, armor skill, what you're wearing, etc. determines your round time, your ability to stand when knocked over.) Armor effects what type of damage, (blood loss, extent of injuries, what weapons do what type of damage, etc.) if you're hiding, a creature may take a chance and sniff around for you (possibly finding you). When you're kill by an ice troll, if may decide to scalp you, or use your corpse as a sled and sled into the next room, or bury you under the snow (very difficult for a cleric to find you corpse and rezz you).

Merchants that show up travel between towns, a ship full of halflings that occassionally visits the port (they sell large variety of items, weapons, tarts, drinks, etc.) all the while bouncing you around and pandering their wares to the highest bidder.

Empaths tend the wounded in town tending injuries, but only clerics can beseech the gods to revive a person who's been dead. And if you don't tip the empaths for their services, their liable to let you bleed to death the next time you stumble into town.

That does sound amazing, by all means, I may just try that out.

Mozart Mud is, for all intensive purposes, a generic MUD with a simple outline. Kill, reach the highest attainable level, arm yourself with the most powerful gear in the game, and work your way up the ranks of the "Avatar" bracket, (aka level 99 and higher).

I tend to be anti-social in other types, too. Tried a few MMO's but... yeah, got kinda bored kinda quick. And lost. I'm only a little better in forums, but I still often wait to be talked to. ^^;

If you've an interest in MUDs, there's a book called Wyrm which has some heavy dealings with MUDs

Haha, well, you'll be fine, I'm sure. You should voice your opinion more, that's how I open up in a community. Obviously some people won't identify with you, some will, and that's what counts.

I just got home from the mall, even stopped by a book store...

Didn't read the post until now, though. Damn.

Well, the next time I get out, I'll make sure I keep an eye out for it. Thanks.

What the f is a mud. It sounds like sand mixed with water...

Novalyyn
Aside from the fast that what a MUD is is explained right in the title... sand and water is just wet sand. Or sandy water. T'ain't fine enough for mud. ^^

I've been mudding for about six or seven years now. I honestly didn't expect to see a thread about mudding.

The mud I play at is a roleplay centered game. Not WoW in text in the least.

It's somewhat DnDish, but more of a Tolkien High Fantasy. Although it's not the Tolkien world. It has several races, active gods, ongoing storylines, and is in truth still in development. They consider themselves 'alpha' stage but there's enough game to support it right now. The main hope is to get testing done while roleplaying, report bugs and get them fixed as the world is built.

It's called Advent of the Mists:
