Demon in Shades of Gray
So I'm at work today, making everyone else look bad, when the store gets a phone call. The guy who's supposed to come in to take over the shift after I leave is apparently "sick" (i.e. a lazy trouser stain). Without missing a beat, 3 different managers simultaneously decide to have ME stay and work a double shift today. Rather than calling someone else in, they tell me that, since I'm the most talented salesman in the store, they need my help

I wind up having to cancel a date with a girl who may very well have been incredibly good looking (never met her in person, only talked over the phone), reschedule a court date (long story deserving of its own thread), and put off cleaning my apartment (... meh) all because nobody else that works there would know how to sell a computer if Franklin jumped off of the $100 bill and shook their hand.

Being talented blows.

well then. ive had days like that.being the only one with decent enough talent in photoshop and having your god-like photoshop master of a teacher deciding to sick.....
i had to help all the newbs (other than my buddy who had talent to rival mine but was WAY too lazy to do sh**} for two gaddamned hours...ugg.

"worst day ever..."

I remember being that guy, back when I worked in retail. The only difference was, they knew better than to try to make me stay. (I had a bit of a reputation....)

Oh I've been there before! However at the time I was more amused that I knew Photoshop better then anyone else in the class to be able to teach it.

I'm still in training at work, otherwise I'd probably be in the same situation.

Similar situation in high school programming classes, except the teacher wasn't so much "god-like master" as "completely useless". We made a deal about a week into the semester. I agreed not to mock him, orthe women who ran the computer lab, in front of the students, help him out a bit teaching, and I get an A.

Ya see... I got kicked out of my class... Because I kept pointing out her mistakes... Though the whole two weeks she put up with me... it was fun tongue.gif

What incentives are offered to you to work hard and do well?

Sometimes you have to wonder about teaching credentials, you know. I basically taught my high school drafting class the last year, then when I get to college, none of the GTF's know how to work formZ or Photoshop worth a damn, let alone web page design leaving me to have to learn it all basically on my own and then help the others in the class understand the various programs. And what did I get for that, a fricken ugly orange t-shirt commemorating that term of hell.

Then there are the math professors. OMG they suck. They cant even grade their own homework assignments and have to get other students to do it. Then when it comes to the test, they are to dumb to answer their own problems. I literally had to sit one of my college professors down and show them why their answer was wrong and the answer sheet was right. Of course i did get over 100% in the class but still, my god.

Good thread Daemon, you got me fired up.

Maybe what they really meant was 'We hate you so much' when they said that you were the most talented worker there.

high school drafting class

hahahahaha oh man I was so far ahead of everyone in my drafting class... I got put into a advance placement portion... only for my teacher who was a complete bad ass, to get called into service. So for the rest of the school year. Drafting class was surf the internet and play silly web games. While helping out the sub...

I ran a program in there that I could take over anyone's comp... So I messed with a lot of people. Whats worse is I tought someone else about the program they put it almost everywhere around the school. Some science teacher caught on and he got his computer rights revoked... That was good times... good times indeed... Mostly because I didn't get caught and my Schools IT Deparment couldn't figure out how to remove the program so they had to reformat a couple hundred computers...

My math teacher right now...

gah @.@ We litterally haven't gone a single day since the start of the class (about the middle of january) where she's gone without having to be corrected less than 9 times. We keep track. And this isn't just the smart kids fixing her mistakes; even the worst person in the class has pointed out something she's done wrong.... gah. She had to stop making her own tests, because she'd always mess up the answer key and have to regrade them.

T.T I wish my state required teacher aptitude tests.

i think i saw teaching credentials at walmart in ten packs for $5.00...

We had a program like that when I was working as a sys admin for the school's computer labs in college. Caught one of the kids in the back of the classroom lookin at porn during class, so I put it up on the projector in the room with a note showing who's machine it was from. Heh.

Your IT Department sounds like they are lacking in knowledge, most IT departments I'm guessing would be able to remove it even if it took some effort.

Damn... Why is my timing never that good?

Anyway, government officials of any stripe, be they teacher or otherwise, tend to be pretty useless. I've taught every single English or Literature class I've taken, sat at the back of the class and shared a flask of whiskey with a college theater professor (we were laughing at the poor asses who thought they could act), and translated for a Spanish professor who could say about 30 words in English.

Damn... I'm too freaking smart...

Except at math, I guess. Not stellar at math, just merely terrific.

Haha yes... my High Schools IT departmants were very special... Not a one knew what the hell they were doing. I got such a kick laughing at them trying to figure out what was going on. See the program ran in the backround and unless you knew what you were looking for you wouldn't find it. And you couldn't Ctrl+alt+del it to stop the process... So they felt they had no other choice then to reformat. Sad but true...

Um... was saying 'no' somehow not an option? I mean, this is retail in Feb. Not like Christmas or big sales rush time. You are allowed to have a life. Hopefully they made it worth your while, and yeah, your date will likely understand. But a court date is pretty important and frankly, last minute notice and some flattery is hardly worth it. If you're that good a salesperson, then they should sweeten the deal for you, or you should stop complaining about talent.

Believe me. As a freelanceer it is damn damn DAMN hard to say 'no' to work that comes by, but I'm learning when to and to whom.

Later.

Yeah, except it wasn't really hardcore, and it was COLLEGE, not 7th grade. No minors in the room.
