And so our heroes have failed...

Edit: (i hope Richard brought his pillaging shovel)
dmh3000
A bit of a disappointment, but expected. I guess the "They manage to make it just in time" scenario is a little cliche and overdone, but still, after all that effort only to too little too late...

Oh well, that's life. You do everything you can and sometimes it's just not enough. I guess Sohmer wanted to throw that lesson in. Can't wait to see where this leads though.
Luniria
He;s gonna need a REALLY big pillaging shovel for that mess. XD
Rombom
This is the biggest plot-advancing filler I have ever seen.
The Scholar
So Krunch and the Gnomerlord survived in the tunnels, but did the Matron? Cause if not, there's gonna be a bunch of very Blue Men looking for a new group.
JediWolfSister
Aww... Mulan flashback. Just needs a sword and a doll. ... And snow. What's with being in the "north" and having no snow?

So really, my serious question: Is it just me, or are those ravens clustered a little more tightly around one of the mole-machine holes? If so, then the casualties down the holes didn't get as totaly burned as the ones out on the field, or the birds wouldn't be focusing in on it. Therefore, if any survivors made it down there for cover, they might still be alive.

Then again, those tunnels were made by the enemy, so it's just as (if not more) likely that someone was waiting for exactly that, and everyone attempting to flee that way was rounded up and executed anyway.
Grym
Not... What I was expecting.

I sure hope Krunch is alive. Replacing him with Pella would make me very very unhappy.
Blackshroud
My only question is, how much did they miss it by? I mean, there are Bloodrage skeletons that have been picked clean by carrion birds. They must be at least a week late no?

They can't kill off Krunch so soon after his recent Character Development!

Nah. They were burned. He pulled back the troops, had the battle mages create a sheet of fire, and the archers shot through it, creating instant flame arrows, and torched everything..... 'Least that's what I got out of that little officer dispute.
CrystalSuicune
...Ouch.Too late.

I was about to grumble about fillers until I saw the skull.
Sometimes things like this show better in this way..
sure it looks like filler, but it's not filler.
(or so I heard..)
Luniria
unsure.gif I wonder if Benny and the mages would be able to ressurect any of the bloodrage that recently died. Then we'd have an army of zombie cows returning for revenge against Legara. biggrin.gif
malkavian
man this sucks that i knew this, but what do you know they took to long to get there they should have had the mages teleport them to there or at least Richard and the others run scouts to them to keep them up to date

I was hoping it wasn't going to be the "Here we are just in time to pull off a save by the skin of our teeth!" moment. They're more than a "little" cliché.

I'm thinking they didn't miss it by much, as there's still green magical fire here and there.

Looks like Krunch's horns. And it also looks like a bit of gray fur hanging off the jaw...
shadowhound_89
You know, pillaging is the best part of a battle. It happens after everyone is dead...well, mostly dead. But that's why you bring your pillaging shovel!

And I do want to say that Lar did an amazing job on the crow. Phenomenal work, there.
Rip Van Ishmael
Yaay serialised comics that have much more impact than reading them all at once, but as a result feel like pointless fillers.

You haven't noticed yet? Take a moment (or quite a few) to go through the series so far and find any other moment where weather happened, with the exception of the Hctib Elemental arc.

But if you don't feel like it, I'll just tell you. You won't. It's like they live in some magickal world where anything other than clear skies doesn't exist.

Yeah, Cale tried having Richard scout ahead already. Look what happened.

DeathKnights in WoW.

By the way, great detail on the skull and raven, Lar. Makes an impression.
The Mask
First thing that went through my head was: "Oh sh..." and I never got to finish that...

then I thought that Richard's imp maybe saved them... but that's a "nnnnnnnnnaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh"

... this page is just void. You know... just emptyness... *sad panda face*
Rip Van Ishmael
Kudos to Lar for nailing the tiny little blobs that are still obviously main characters and their companions moving forward.

Turns out it's generally a lot harder to draw things tiny and still render them recognisable than larger and more obvious.

But why is Cale not in front? He said for the mages to flank, not lead.

What a fantastic strip, hey?
A just-in-time-to-save-the-day would have made me throw up.

The skull and the raven on top... very reign of chaos'ish. The bird could've been drawn a lot better...
Zar
Benny has already been shown to have the ability to rez people from little more than talking ashes.

And Cale is being groomed to be king by people with the ability to manipulate time.
Perhaps we'll see a "Return to the Past to save the Future" story? biggrin.gif

Can you prove that sky isn't clear? HMMM?

Sunshowers FTW.

Still, actual weather is pretty rare in this particular comic-verse.

Hm... it seems to me that the page's..voidness.. was caused because this may possibly be the final page for issue #8?

The raven is very well drawn in my opinion, perfect shade of blue that melds into black in the shadow. What precisely is wrong with it?

yeah i know, but thats the thing was he doing it on purpose or was he manipulated not to scout ahead, becasue we all know Richard he loved to kill just for the sake of killing and this is why its seems to scream why is Richard not moving them faster for the fwooshing that he could have done that CALE promised him or remind him of it to make them move faster

Yea, for the first half of the page. From panel 5 and on, its bright and sunneh. I chalk the first bits up more to ambiance than atmosphere.

Pun intended.

I thought about asking that myself. It looks quite well done in my opinion, especially the neck feathers.

yeah the raven on the cow skull is very well drawn

I expected that (right back on topic). There is no North to save anymore. Hopefully we have some survivors thanks to the digger's tunnels but this battle is lost. I wonder what Sohmer and Lar plan next... Revenge on the human capital?

Lunaya
Yeah, totally what I expected. Cale's, "For the North!" was just too enthusiastic not to be followed by an epic fail. I foresee a Vader-esque "NOOOooo!!" in the near future.
mpdscott
I really would like to see that page expanded into a background....
Fou
Did it every occur to anyone that the destruction viewed in this page may not be the entire battlefield, and the war may still be waging past the burned out fields shown?

I mean, it'd be pretty rediculous for them to pass no signs of the battle fought before reaching the thick of the fight where Krunch and the others were.

U make a good point ... after all they did order the retreat ... for all we know the battle is still being waged
plus ths sun was just coming up when they fell back ... now the sun is totally up ... some time had passed
Gwydion
Notice the fact that the forest is burning as well.... that is were the legion was! So logically, the legion's mages wouldn't have burned it unless they retreated even further.
Parivir
Maybe this shows that both side of the war were killed. Granted the story wouldn't have anywhere to go really but nevertheless it is still a possibility.
BlackFrost
remember he made the soldiers pull back, giving the north ample time to retreat to tunnels/caves

BlackFrost
I think its supposed to look like Krunch and he will be missing and presumed dead, then be waiting at Kenethica or something dry.gif
Chuint
If only there was some kind of indicator we could use to identify that skull, like large golden armor or a war-chief's nose ring. Unless there is that could mean...

.......oh shi-

-unless its another guy who looks like Krunch, like the one from a while back. Im willing to go with Blackfrost on this.
Maartentjj
Remember that the commander of Legara said that he would make as many cows captured, not dead...

So there is some hope for Crunch...

I couldn't help but go back too to see if it might be Krunch - but if you compare the angle of the horns to a previous pic then it seems to be someone else. E.g. page 145
