Full Version: What classic rpg moments are missing?

I gotta say. I love this comic, I haven't read one that rips things so thouroughly ever. I'm new, I know, but hey, I've read the lot and I gotta say there's a brilliance in there that I haven't seen very often.
Now onto topic, what hasn't been slagged or is missing in terms of old rpg/fantasy nostalgic type things?
For me, it's definitely gotta be the lack of a bag of holding, and weapons of mass destruction. I mean, since when did a lvl 30 paladin sun elf (I'm guessing that's what Cale is in DnD terms) not have a sword that did divine damage on a big scale. Or just simple fire would be nice.
Old DnD spells? There were two spellcasters in that group and I don't recall catching any jokes about individual spells.
Traps?
Riddles? Ok, the Archmage and the beholder don't count, mages always talk in riddles.
I haven't seen Azmodeus and his other netherworld colleagues, which, I have to admit would be expected seeing as Richard is supposed to be lord of the underworld.
Underdog story? Where'd that go? I'm sure they'd have made a reference to something that, I have to admit, is probably so overdone its almost a prerequisite.
Ahh well, I'd blab on but I do need to go.
Kerrah
Whoah. For once there's a guy who thinks LFG is something else than WoW.

There has not been a love interest! And we have yet to see any secerets as to what the great evil force driving everything is yet! (or have we? muwahah)
Lord of the dance
Richard has a bag of holding. It's never directly referenced but he carries around a vast selection of things that he can't possibly have on his person, a suggestion box, a bucket and spade, a sack filled with centaur feet...
Rip Van Ishmael
Welll, the sack filled with centaur feet might just have been his way of picking up souvenirs from the north....

He's not the only one with a bag of holding. Krunch has very literal hammerspace, and Benny has a treasure chest.

A treasure chest from what mob?

Venril Sathir, Trakanon, Vox, Drusella Sathir, Polyphemus, Rama'nai...?

In DnD terms, he's a level 30 High Elf Ranger. Paladins can't dual wield.

In EverQuest I and II terms, he's a level 60 High Elf Ranger (eqI) and a level 30 High Elf Ranger (EqII)

In WoW? Who gives a shit?

In Forgotten Realms DnD, he's a level 30 surface elf Ranger.

Thar ya go.

Infact, I don't think there's a Paladin IN LFG. Except maybe Pella's father. You know what? I think I can describe each of the main characters in DnD terms. Atleast their classes.

Pella: Bard
Benny: Cleric
Richard: Mage
Krunch: Hmm... Not sure, gonna go with warrior.
Cale: Ranger

In D&D terms, here are the closest approximations in terms of abilities:

Pella: Bard, or Bard / Eldritch Knight
Benny: Cleric
Richard: Warlock, although he's truthfully closer to a Lich Sorceror.
Krunch: Barbarian
Cale: Ranger or, more correctly, a dexterity-focused Fighter.

Of course, as Sohmer has said, the characters in LFG are not directly based on any specific roleplaying system, nor are they confined to the strict class rules and requirements that rule them. Rather, they are amalgamations, based on fantasy lore and concepts from various games. While they do tend to fit into loosely defined character roles that we are familiar with, they are their own characters.

If you're looking for what game LFG is most referred to, try one that has the term "Warlock" and "Mage" EXTREMELY close. Richard is referred tp as Warlock, however they keep threatening him they'll use a mage(so the mage must have the same abilities).

I personally regard this as 'fantasy' simply, not something BASED on ANY game.

Well, you have to remember, in the beginning it was going to be a WoW comic, where no doubt EqII players like myself would flamed up the ass.

But now it's loosely based on WoW, but for the tighter, compact part it's just fantasy.

Unless you want to go the extra mile and say Krunch and his race are Minotaurs.
Rip Van Ishmael
But they look nothing like minotaurs.

But they look nothing like minotaurs.

Not necessarily. There have been many different variations on Minotaurs. The Tauren were originally supposed to be Minotaurs, but they said fuck it and made an anthropomorphic cow race.

Hey, EverQuest has their Iksar, WoW has their Tauren.

I prefer iksar though, reptiles are the shit.
Gingerplague
Well if you go by J.K Rowling's books "Warlock" is simply a title given to particularly powerful Wizards, or as they are sometimes known as.... Magi (that's the plural i'm talking about a Mage). So if we were to work with that theory it would lead us to conclude that Richard is actually a Mage that is so powerful he earned the title "Warlock", which when you think about how amazingly strong he is makes sense, and it would also explain why he possess powers from both these different classes (not just from WoW but rpg in general).

...

But thats just what I think, like you guys said we can't be limited from one source.
