It's pretty common for a writer to look back at an embellishment (such as, say, a joking remark about being mayor of a nice town up the coast) only to realize that, rather than purely ornamental, the little idea has merit. On occasion those "happy accident" ideas will even solve major plot knots. That means, however, that whether or not a story goes "exactly as planned" is not just a matter of what the plan
was, but whether the plan has changed.
Imho, the
mention of Hctib was foreshadowing and not just a gag-turned-plot, but whether other gags will face the same fate... depends on just how much SohLar knew, for certain, about Richard as early as page 3. I say "for certain" because an idea might suffer the opposite fate, and get nixed-- so maybe Richard DID have a coastal town and it WAS going to be important, but then it got written out. I don't think there's any way to know for sure until it happens. Or we may wait forever, and it never will happen. And we'll never know how much, and what sort of, planning went into the idea unless SohLar decide to enlighten us.
...on another topic entirely, why do I find myself writing on this board every time my insomnia kicks in? >< You regulars put something in the water, don't you? Anyway, that's why this might be completely incomprehensible and pointless to boot. ^^;
