Last night I stayed up until about 5am raiding on World of Warcraft. (4 hour clear of Naxx with mostly annoying pug goons with some good players.)

Waking up to go to church. Then I come back home and pretty much go back to sleep for another 3 hours. When I woke up and got on my computer, it felt as though it's a new day. Like it doesn't feel like Sunday anymore because of that 3 hour nap.

You ever get that feeling after you take a long or somewhat long nap? You wake up and it totally feels like a new day. Sometimes that feeling is great and you feel like you've gotten a freebie or something. Or you facepalm yourself for sleeping too long when you should be up doing constructive things like posting a topic like this (lol not really but you know what I mean).

This is sort of what's been going on with me for the past month or more. Going to bed way late (or very early in the morning) and getting up at like 10-11am. Eventually taking various naps during the day whether I want to or not (sometimes falling asleep at my compy).

Do any of you have or had bad habits such as this?
darkdragonh8
I do all my self-destructive behaviors in one go. Full three days with no sleep, staring at a digital marathon, taking breaks only for pizza and bathrooms.
The Lone David
I have two that don't really affect my life outside of hating myselft for about half an hour in the morning. If I fall asleep on the couch, I unconsioulsly push myself so that my head is tucked in the back corner of the sofa with my ear pressed to my shoulder, I wake up with a wicked cramp in my neck every time.

If I fall asleep in bed I sleep with my arm under my head, my arm always falls asleep, and I always slap myself trying to stifle a yawn or wipe my eyes.
Guh?
I used to have bad sleeping patterns a couple years ago, going to bed at 2 AM or so and waking up, then sleeping as soon as I got home. Now that I have to push my body to the breaking point, I can't really afford to go to bed past 11 PM anymore.

I don't think your sleeping pattern is that healthy, really. Also, I despise taking naps, no matter what reason. Every time I do, I wake up angry at myself because I could've been doing something constructive.

I pretty much go to bed at 10:30, wake up at 5 in the morning because I've some how managed to take off every single bed sheet/blank, even the ones under me, and then go back to sleep for another hour before I get ready for school.

When I used to work the night shift, I would stay up with the kids until two o'clock, and then take a nap until eight thirty, when I needed to get up and get ready. One day off I had, I slept right through it! I went to bed when I got home at eight in the morning and didn't wake up until eight that night! I thought I had slept through a working day, but I hadn't. A couple nights ago I stayed up until six in the morning playing WoW, went to work and came home to take a small nap. When I woke up, it was still dark out, so I thought I slept in all day again!

I rarely ever get to bed at a decent time. Hell, if I actually go to bed before midnight, people wonder whats wrong with me. Even on nights when I know I have to be up before noon, I still end up staying up to 3 or 4 in the morning.

Most of this is due to the fact that my daughter isn't living with me at the moment. When she was, I kinda HAD to be in bed and up at a decent time for her. But since I've been on my own, my sleeping habits have become... less than perfect. It'd been years since I had the freedom to stay up and sleep as late as I wanted.

The biggest thing that keeps me awake at night is my husband. Hes currently over in Korea, so if I actually want to chat with him, I have to stay up really late due to time differences. Thankfully he'll be back in the States in a couple months, so I won't have to worry about that anymore. Of course, I'll prolly still end up staying up, just cause its something I do. I will have to get used to sleeping at a decent time though, cause eventually my kid will be moving back in with me and I'll have to straighten my sleep patterns out because of her.

But right now my sleep habits are pretty screwed up. Years ago when I was working at KFC, I hardly ever slept. I'd go into work at like 8am, work til 5pm, come home and sit on my computer til 3am, shower, sleep until 7, then do it all over again. And that was almost every day. The only time I ever really slept was on my days off.

I believe you go to sleep in your bed that way is to simulate sleeping on your couch. With your arm acting as the corner of the couch, it places you in a position that your body is familiar with and thus, go to sleep.

I do the same thing every night ever since my earlier days of youth. Every night I tuck my covers all around me so that there's no loose end other than my head poking out of my covers. This is to simulate my sleeping in a sleeping bag since I've been on many a camping trip when I was in Boys Scouts years ago.

It's basically because your body is so tired that it needed the extra sleep that you've been somewhat missing on your regular sleeping schedule, I believe. We all do this at some time or another ever couple weeks or so depending on how hard you exhaust your body, I think.

Kelly
Don't even TALK to me about my sleeping habits. The other day, I had to work at 6AM...so I basically stayed up all night so that I didn't have to worry about sleeping in. And I was fine at work, but then the entire rest of the day I was soooooo screwed up. XD

Sleep deprivation does very very very bad things to Kelly. O_O

Devin Austra
I don't have any problems with sleep schedules, really. I can sleep at any time of the day or night, but I prefer going to sleep around 3 a.m. It's perfectly dark and almost perfectly quiet at that time of the morning.
I'm not an early bird. I tried working an early day shift for 2 1/2 years, and I never became used to the schedule. I hated being in bed by 9 p.m. I never could stay up late enough to enjoy Friday and Saturday nights, and I hated trying to sleep while the sun was still up and everyone else was up and about, keeping me awake. Getting up at 4 a.m. was a chore in itself because that's my favorite time to be in bed. I got enough sleep, but it was hard falling asleep and waking up at those hours.

Now I work 2nd shift and pretty much get to sleep as late as I want except on school days, which are only Monday and Wednesday. I get off work and maybe do some grocery shopping, which is nice because almost no one else is in the store or on the road at the time. When I get home, it's nice and quiet. I get something to eat, get a shower, read the mail, feed the fish, maybe do some dishes, and go to bed right when it's dark and quiet.

I do have a problem with my sleeping positions though. I tend to sleep in positions that aggravate my sore shoulder and hip. A new SleepNumber mattress is helping though. I have the pressure set so low I practically sink into it when I lie down.
niarBaD
I have serious issues with sleeping schedules. Mostly because when i'm not working or not going to school and have no set need to sleep, I end up with what I like to call a "Rotating" Sleep schedule. In that, I don't go to bed till i'm tired, and i tend to sleep a lot, thus meaning i wake up later at some point, which means i wont get tired till later, and go to bed till later, and wake up later. Sometimes it takes a week, other times a month before i'm back to normal sleep.

it doesn't help that i dont have full healthy meals constantly so my energy is usually low. Just a matter of how much adrenaline i'm living off of.

I know what you mean. The cycle keeps getting push back until you're awake until like 7am in the morning and sleep in until like 2-3pm. That's what I don't want to get to. Especially since I have classes Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Devin Austra
I used to do that.
The trick is to set your alarm and get up at a certain time every day, even if you don't have to go anywhere immediately. You have to train yourself to go to sleep and wake up at a certain time every day.

It also helps if you use your bed only for sleeping. You need to get your brain to associate your bed with sleep and nothing else. Don't lie there and just relax, daydream, read a book, watch TV, listen to your iPod, whatever. If you aren't sleeping or trying to sleep, do not lie in bed.
Also keep the room as dark and quiet as possible. No computer lights, lava lamps, or anything else that causes a distraction.

If you have trouble falling asleep, you can try counting your breaths while breathing slowly and deeply. Kinda like meditation, I guess, but it does work.

That's what I do. I set my alarm clock to 11am when I don't have classes to worry about. It mostly works unless I push the snooze button and get back in bed (I have my alarm clock placed far enough away where I have to get up to turn it off... usually works but not all the time).

I can't really do the count your breath/sheep thing I usually get impatient and then toss and turn to get in a comfy position.
Verbose
I used to do whatever.

If I didn't feel like it, I wouldn't sleep. Sometimes I'd go three days without sleeping on a whim. Then I'd sleep a bunch, or swap from a day cycle to a night cycle.

Unfortunately, my body has become sneakier in recent years. Aided by my depression, too. I should have predicted they'd gang up on me. These days, when my body wants to sleep it makes me feel cold. When I'm cold in my room, it's easiest to lie on the bed under my blankets. It's an insidious move. Took me two or three goes to realise the trap.

I'm currently in the process of getting a heater. Check and mate, body. You'll sleep when I tell you to sleep.
Hades
My sleep schedule (or lack there of) was the main reason me and my last girlfriend didn't work out after she moved in. I sleep when I'm tired and that is it. I usually sleep for 4-6hours every 35hours or so, give or take a few hours if I would be working or have something planned. And still with the 35 hours i have to force myself to sleep by exercising for an or two. I can easily go 48 hours without sleep and be fine physically, the problems that I run into with the prolonged time is that I never know what day it is and when conversing with people that tends to be a big problem.
Redington
Jeez. I can't go wihtout sleep on a whim for too long. Maybe a day. Would little brief naps count? Because if I wanted to go for a few days without sleep, I'd definitely end up takeing a few naps whether I want to or not.

Of course, this is without any kind of external help, such as coffee and energy drinks.
Hades
I own a coffee maker, only use it when its cold and then still not very often.

Only time I've ever had an energy drink was on a camping a trip, one of my brothers brought a bunch of sparks. bleh
Redington
The thing is... I never drank coffee. I had 1 sip once a long time ago. But I never had any since. I just hate the smell and the taste isn't really any better.
Zoran
To put it short, I punch people that try to wake me up at night to just mess with me.

Yeaaahhhhh....
darkdragonh8
As I recall, in our old all-nighter marathon crew, there'd invariably be someone snoring softly, face embedded in the keyboard. Everyone else would either be raiding silently, sipping their drinks, or looking over the shoulders of those playing, or taking naps wherever they fell. It was like a computer haven, when the raids were many, the loot plenty, and the comrades...well, that bit could have used some work, but you make do.
Redington
Which game would you be talking about Darkdragon?

I don't think I've ever tried to pull an all-niter raid unless you count old AV runs before they overhauled AV. Longest AV I did was 11 hours. That was intense. (I'm talking about WoW if you didn't know.)

well if you push for an all clear it can take a while for some guilds

i know my guild is just starting to get kara on farm, and it still takes them 2 nights to finish it

I've been doing that every day for like the past eight years or so. One time I was mentally a month ahead of what it actually was. :\ I wish I was joking, lol. What makes it worse is that my room at my place has no windows, and my clock doesn't clearly indicate AM or PM from a distance. So I never know what time of day it is when I wake up if I don't set an alarm.
hhh221
i sleep normaly, but i stay awake longer than normal somtimes and it screw up my sleep pattern, this summer i stoped it by staying awake all night and going to sleep normally the next day.

I've tried that in the past, and it only works sometimes. I think I can't really use that plan of attack anymore because my body knows about it and knows how to deal with it better now that I've used that trick.

What it comes down to, I think, is actually doing some physical exercise for me. Make myself more exhausted so that I can go to bed at a reasonable time. But I haven't really gotten around to going to the gym lately due to laziness and such.

I'm starting to think that's one of the most terrible feelings/place to be in now. The time just gores FWOOSH right past you like it has somewhere else to be.
Bullhead
it's 3 after midnight where I am now (english isn't my first language so I forget whether am or pm is after midnight) and I'm playing WoW. Beyond that I got a nasty addiction to warcraft fanfictions some of which takes 4 hours to read through all the chapter from beginning to end without breaks. Which is why I've sometimes only gone to sleep at 5-6 after midnight
Devin Austra
FYI, as soon as that clock hits midnight, it flips back to a.m.

I'll probably be up most of the night, as I slept late both yesterday and today.
Getting up for class is going to suck.
ryannayr417
I go to bed around 11, wake up at 450, go to bed till five thirty, get ready for school, come home at 2 if its monday wednsday, or thursday, sleep for an hour on the couch, wake up and have a snack, get my brother off the bus and do my hw, prepare dinner, dad finishes dinner, eat dinner, finish hw, chat with friends online or text, start over. If its a tuesday or friday i go to work instead of napping preparing dinner or getting my brother. Over the summer I had major jet lag, i would fall asleep at twelve(pm) and wake up at seven(pm) go about my business all night and start over.

I try and time my sleeping patterns with my husbands schedule; but tonight its not happening. My habits usually entail my going to bed around 10pm on the weekends then waking up around 11am the next morning unless I have appointments and stuff to do. On nights like tonight I will most likely pass out at 7 in the morning then wake up around 1 in the afternoon. Basically I just go to bed when my body finally shuts down enough to.

In short... I have really bad sleeping habits.

I work shift work(0500-1300-2100-0500) and whichever shift I'm working changes every few days. Combine that with oddball PT hours for each shift, and I don't have a bad sleeping habit, I have a bad sleeping job. Bigtime suxors.

Yeah, when I was in the Air Force, they had us work 3 days on 24/3 and then had a day off - this was during training though, my body couldn't keep up and I got a discharge, but hey everybody always has a price to pay. Take care of yourself.

I rarely stay up past midnight, and I wake up early too. Which is a good thing, morning is the only time of the day I can get quiet and sunshine at the same time.

Now a days I stay up past 12 browsing these here Forums and wake up at 5:30 every morning for seminary...

Same here! Its weird, once I bit my finger and there was no pain for like five minutes, I drew blood too. I discovered last night that falling asleep curled up against a warm masculine back is really really really nice, would do again.
