So yea, apprenticeship wouldn't really work out too well, seeing as how as soon as you get a little good at it, Richard will fwoom you.
I don't think it would be that simple. Yes, no doubt Richard would give up and fwoom hopelessly incompetent apprentices. From Richard's point of view, not being able to appreciate or remember Richard's vast superiority would certainly be proof of gross incompetence. So, yeah, any apprentice would have to remember their place. But Richard is transparent enough to let a reasonably clever apprentice manipulate Richard's ego. No doubt Richard would know what they were up to, but the fact that they were willing to do it would satisfy him. OTOH, if Richard fwooms someone just because they learn how to do a few things, how can they kiss his butt anymore?
Another aspect is that Richard wants a challenge. Of course, he wants to win even more, but why would he ever doubt that he would? I could see Richard toying with an apprentice, too. Let the apprentice do something a little impressive, then top it. Once the apprentice figures that out, top that one, too. Rinse, lather, repeat.
Letting an apprentice move on would be a little tricky. Richard wouldn't like them not needing him anymore. But Richard would get some ego satisfaction from the idea that they owe what they are to him.
I don't think it's all that different from the real world. There are a lot of egotistical bosses out there who are not all that different from Richard. Granted they can't fwoom anyone, but they can fire them, and in a way it's the same thing: firing someone makes them disappear from the company's or shop's universe. (I just noticed that the word is "fire". Interesting.)
Richard has shown that he can be very tolerant of people. Yes, really! Richard couldn't get Cale to stop calling him "Dick". (The fwoom doesn't hardly count since Richard got Cale restored.) Benny uses magic, so Richard could easily see her as a bit of a rival, but hasn't. Richard tried to put Pella in her place when he first met her, but she chopped off his arm instead. Richard said, "Nobody puts Richard in a corner," but let Tavor live. Ray'd put Richard in his place in front of everyone after Richard rode one of the Bloodrage. (Richard got in the last word eventually, but Ray'd wasn't fwoomed.) Finally, Benny and Pella just saved Richard from the Plain of Suck after Richard couldn't save himself. I'd bet that burns a little. It seems that anyone who could be the slightest bit of use to Richard gets a free pass.
I don't think Richard has ever been as one-sided as people make him out to be. He'd be very boring, to me anyway, if he was.
