Full Version: Trigger-Happy Moderators (Or what's with all the locked threads?)

To clarify, this applies particularly to the LFG section. The others I have not checked. Also, if a mod is reading this and it is against forum policy to discuss moderator actions, please lock this thread and send me a PM about the matter. This thread was made in error - please lock.

Why do the mods keep locking threads for the slightest of reasons? It seems if anyone posts anything that might be slightly off-topic it get locked. And if anyone posts any new topic which may slightly resemble some previously mentioned topic it is going to get locked - and is thread necromancy against the rules as well? Because, that would mean new members do not get a say on old topics at all (you start a thread that has been posted before it will be locked; you post in the old thread it will be locked).

Is it just me, or is does this all seem unreasonable? Perhaps I am exaggerating this since I recently had a thread locked myself - but looking through the archives I am seeing a lot of threads that bite the dust because a mod saw it fit under 'been talked about somewhere down the road!' or 'slightly off topic!' In my opinion, the looking of my thread was particularly frustrating because it had only four replies and only the middle two could be considered off topic. Further, when I looked for a thread in the archives addressing the issue I brought up, I could not find it! I even PMed the mod about the old thread and he has not answered!

Perhaps I am blowing this out of proportion, I will admit to that possibility. But I find it more likely moderators need to lighten up a tad. And I don't mean any offense to the mods, I know you guys are just doing your jobs so to say.

To quote the rules of this forum:

"Second Note: We've mentioned it several times before, common sense says that if you've been corrected or think someone or something is doing something wrong, to PM the mods, not accuse openly in the forums. This is considered trolling and isn't constructive. It is never -wise- to tell the mods how to do their jobs in public."

I probably shouldn't be answering this, but I'll try to say only what I know are facts...Mods are busy a lot of the time, so.....

1. This should probably have been in a pm to a mod. Its probably true that they have problems getting back to all of their pm's....specially considering that they have real lives too. The past few months, almost all of the mods have had huge RL things come up and their time here had to be cut down a bit.

2. In the announcement and comic section rules, it clearly states that there is to be no derailing of threads. Its there, people are warned, threads are locked for it...and yet people do it. If you want to blab and discuss things, there is a general section. Not supposed to derail threads in there at all, ever...

3. I believe the necro limit is two or three months. Again, its specifically stated in the rules of that section. Each section has a list of rules that you should probably look over. Most are the same, but that doesn't mean they all are.

I would comment on the 'this thread has been discussed before' part of it, but I have no facts there. I don't want to throw in an opinion or a guess, because its not my place. Hope this helped you understand a few things....or....something.

Edit: It should also be noted that our Moderators are EXTREMELY patient and generally friendly and nice about the way things are done.

1. The moderators here are actually very relaxed. Just follow the rules.
2. Kayhynn is a girl. Referring to her as "he" won't win you brownie points.
3. There is a thread devoted to each daily comic. The one you were commenting on was from 9 months ago.
4. Too many new threads clutter up the forum.
5. If you're unsure, try asking a mod before posting next time.

p.s. Questioning the overall character development in an online fantasy/D&D spoof comic is pretty silly anyway, don't you think? rolleyes.gif

edit: Wow...beat me there, eh Darkhawk? And used a list...great minds think alike! smile.gif

Indeed. *mental high five before this thread gets locked*
dreamchaser
*snicker*
*pokes it with a derailer*

On a helpful note, perhaps the daily comic needs a "comments" link like the ones over at LICD have. Make it easier to find the right thread for people who are only now reading comics from last years archive...

>.< How could I have missed that? I feel foolish now.

Lock requested.

I would suggest that when locking a thread that has been discussed before, include a link to the discussion.

its not the mods fault, allot of the new members are just morons
Legendaryratboy
I don't think the rules are unreasonable at all, they're actually much better than some forums I've seen before.

Also, maybe you should read them before asking? just a thought.

*Slaps H3's wrist* No name calling in a thread like this! Most people just don't read the rules or really know how things work. If they actually read the rules before complaining(derailing...), then it wouldn't be so bad.

As for things being locked/merged quicker in the Comic forum, it was specifically requested by the powers that be (aka Sohmer and lar) that things remain on topic and that we monitor it strictly. We were lenient for a while, but we ended up cracking down. If a topic gets derailed (Chuck norris comments are NOT appropriate to the comic forum, k, thks, bye) the thread will be locked.

We have also repeatedly encouraged for searches to be done on the topic at hand.

Resurrecting dead/beaten like a dead horse topics only creates trolling and derailing quickly as you saw in your post.

That being said, I received your PM. I do not have time to do a search for the topic, but having been a mod here for going on 2 years, I think I can be fairly trusted when I say "the subject has been discussed before"

A few thigns to keep in mind.

Kay
