OOTS or LFG?
I say LFG is way better but OOTS is still cool, yet OOTs fans think LFG stinks.
For proof read this:
http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81743

This message is brought to you by the people who study the effects of posting a "which is better?" in on of said webcomics fourms.
MrEasterband
I say that they are two entirely different kinds of web comics, which makes it impossible to compare them fairly.

As for "which is better?" threads on comic Forums... I find those stupid. Why compare when you can enjoy both?
Neomancer
Personaly I prefer LFG, but I love OOTS as well. I think he major determining factor for most people (when two comics are equally good) will be which one the started reading first.
ryannayr417
So, what i got from that forum was that 90-95% of OoTS can't keep their minds focused long enough to see the bigger picture of the plot lines LFG branches off on. Nor can said people appreciate the fact that there are less comics done for LFG because it started later and that the art work is much more detailed.
Grym
As someone from the OotS forum stated, "the forum here is likely to be a bit biased"

LFG wins by a small margin They're both good comics. And one person from OotS summed up LFG's humour so far with "As for the humor, it's good, but most of it boils down to either A: Richard is Evil, or B: Richard's name can be shortened to "****" LOL DIRTY WORD!"
Legendaryratboy
OF COURSE! And "krunch is a smart guy surrounded by idiots", "benny is a healer with a violent streak a mile long", "cale is clueless", "sohmer is a fan of fantasy", etc. don't count...

LFG is so far my favourite webcomic I've ever read.

It is most certainly, however, not the best.

I can name at least two in each category of webcomics that are drawn better, have better plots and/or have more unique, likeable characters.

But LFG is still my absolute favourite webcomic ever.

I think subliminal messaging may be involved.
Greenguy
Since starting to read LFG all other previous webcomics were thrown out the window as I read this one...

I have read Order of the Stick, Oracle for Hire, Least I could do and many others ... but so far LFG is the best one

Never heard someone refer to DD by it's subtitle before....

Speaking of, DD has a much better storyline(s) than LFG, but the art...meh. It's all a matter of perspective.

Yeah well I think the subtitle actually sounds better than DD mellow.gif

But aside from that minor stint a couple storylines back it's inaccurate.
Death Dragon
Hi Gamerkid! I was kinda wondering if you were going to make another post here (I'm Death Dragon on the OOTS forums as well.)

I think a lot of the OOTS-only fans just didn't like the fact that this is plot first, humor second. Which is fine, some people just want fast humor, some want plot . . . some just generally have no idea what's going on the first time they read anything and can't be held accountable for ensuing confusion . . . (guess which I am!)

But what's really ticking me off is all the claims that LFG is a rip-off of 8-Bit theater, more specifically, Richard is a carbon copy of Black Mage. That's not true at all. That's just stupid. Aside from "They like to kill", there isn't anything similar about them . . .

Also, people were complaining about lack of character development, but it looks like Richard's about to get some now anyway.

All that said, I don't really like comparing them - I read them for different reasons, and those reasons aren't really comparable.
Chander
I find OOTS kind of hit-and-miss. It's funny at times, but it relies too much on blatantly breaking the fourth wall for its humour. Which is fine, if you enjoy that, but it got old for me after a while. LFG is great fun, although it took me a while to realise that there actually IS a plot that I'm supposed to be following, not just random humour. I mean, I thought the Sword of Truth thing was just a throwaway reference to Terry Goodkind, not a major plot point.
Theodoriph
OOTS is the better comic in terms "high-brow" humour.

In terms of character development and plot, I prefer OOTS. The characters (with the exception of Belkar) are generally deeper and I personally find the plot more interesting. And yes, part of that is because it's had longer to develop. I also find humour and plot tend to co-exist peacefully.

But what really puts OOTS over the top for me is that Rich is the better wordsmith, and his puns are numerous and divine. =D

That being said I like LFG too. The humour is more low-brow, but I enjoy random humourous violence from time to time. The art style is pleasing. The one thing I have a problem with is that Richard tends to dominate the comic whenever he's on the scene, so I feel I don't know much about the others. They need more screen time. Hopefully he'll be tied up in that trial for a wee little while.
Threeshades
for my part i still dont understand whats happening in LFG, but i keep reading it nevertheless. I still like OOTS better plotwise mainly because i know whats going on but also because in OOTS the way plotlines are interwoven just appeals me more. The plotlines in LFG are either rather simple or totally confusing, but i guess its just me. I like both comics, but oots a little bit more.

I tried reading OotT once... I found it dull.

That's right, DULL!

(Eat that, Suckas!)
Kerrah
I got around to reading OOTS today. I've read the first ~150 strips now, that's around the same amount that LFG has out in total.

I have to admit that for now, I like OOTS more, even though I've never even played D&D. However, I have a little fear in my spine that the humour will get old and self-repeating before I reach its more modern installments.

Of course, LFG wins in art, but it's not like the comics can really be compared on that specific statistic.

And just for kicks, I'd like to add that 8-bit Theatre is awesome 55% of the time, the rest of it is unfunny and undramatic.

I like Oots but the problem I have with it is the fact it gets too wordy at times ... I'm reading it and about half way through the comic my brain starts reading it as blah .. blah .. blah. Also as of late the jokes haven't been all that funny though the latest page gave me a good chuckle

I used to love Flintlocke's Guide to Azeroth. Was a sad day when they stopped doing it. (Was even sadder when they brought it back for a couple of episodes by a different artist, and it just ... didn't ... work, so they let it slip quietly away again.)

Anyhow. LFG is a more than worthy replacement for Flintelocke.

Had a quick look at OOTS. I know the South Park-esque simplicity is intentional, but still, it's a bit offputting. Think I've looked at it before but it didn't float my boat enough to make me go back. But since some of you think it has hidden depths I'll check it out again properly.
Flo
OOTS hadn't even made a blink on my radar yet sad.gif

But now I have another comic for my "Waste time now" folder! Yay!

Plus who doesn't love a place where you can toss water balloons at scientologists...

I started with OotS, two years earlier than LFG.

Quoted for truth.

Kish of OotS forum:
It's more like a screed by the author against some MMORPG players with whom he disagrees on the content of that MMORPG. (That is to say, all the humor in it goes, "The Horde in World of Warcraft is evil and the Alliance is good, ha ha! Look how evil the Horde is, ho ho!)
What?

To me, OotS seems to be a badly-written campaign (not a parody of badly-written campaigns, which is DM of the Rings). Random stuff happens. Yay. Sure, there's an overarching plot, but that's what a campaign supposed to have. And it might be planned for years to come, but from my POV, it's still random. I cannot relate to the characters. I used to enjoy it during the first arc for the jokes, now I check it once or twice a month to see where the plot is going, because once I invest some time in reading something, I usually want to know how it ends. Except the Sovereign Stone Trilogy, there's no way I'm touching vol. 3.

LFG is a brilliant parody of epic fantasy books. It borrows imagery from WoW and therefore contains some obligatory WoW references ("Walk it off" comes to mind). Nothing else. Some folks at the OotS forums seem to lack hardware to understand that.

Some complained about the low joke per page ratio. Fiiine, here's a challenge: reformat an OotS page in the classic comic book style. And I'm not saying redraw, I'm saying change the font, the page size and, as you're probably going to wind up with 0.7 frames per page, insert some additional frames. Then see how many jokes per page you get. Too much work? Okay, just calculate a joke per word ratio, see how it goes.

Is the plot hard to follow? Hell no. I always know where stuff happens and what precedes it. It's OotS that would benefit from an indexing system as in DMM's Irregular Webcomic!, because after I get through a couple of "talk" pages (where nothing happens and which would take half an issue in a regular comic), I need to do some backtracking. When you see Rich Burlew do close-ups, that is TL;DR material right there.
On the other hand, Erfworld is deliberately confusing in the beginning, and I love it.

Generally, I am opposed to any sort of deranged rivalry between fans. But that's something they started, using some sort of bizarre logic that also suggests an online poll asking "Do you use Internet" would produce accurate results. Good going.

Comics I subscribe to (I read a dozen more, but these are special):

Looking For Group (obviously)

Irregular Webcomic!
A photo comic strip by David Morgan-Mar, an Austrailan physicist and a genius. Geeky gags, great extra features and an occasional hobbit pun.

Darths & Droids
A Star Wars parody roleplaying screencap comic by DMM et al., in the vein of DM of the Rings, but with character development.

Erfworld
By Rob Balder and Jamie Noguchi. An inside look on tabletop wargaming. Very weird, but brilliant.

Goblins: Life Through Their Eyes
The title says it. Created by Tarol Hunt. Updates slowly, but definitely worth the wait. There'll be a flash game too.

XKCD
A stick figure comic strip. Geeky stuff, gets weird sometimes.
Loric21

Really? Two words: wounded idealist. Or maybe 3: wounded marty sue, except for "THE INCIDENT" he's steadfastly a good person, and even that was portrayed as something beyond his control.

He's just as one sided as he was before "THE INCIDENT" only instead of being naively good, he's apathetically good; in some ways, this is worse for his development, as he went from being irritating to not really provoking a reaction at all.

The problem is it went from being a comic centered on some jokes based on a WoW stereotype and Richard, to a more plot driven one, without really building up for it first. I think the plot of LFG has promise, but until the characters are fleshed out more, it doesn't really matter what happens to them. It's possible to talk about Krunch's family, but who is Krunch? Why should I care? Even with his nuclear family around him, you don't learn anything new about his dynamic with other people, other than his brother being physically stronger than him, and him disagreeing with his father. In short, we know his character traits, but we don't know his personality or what makes him tick.

As mentioned before, it's possibly just an age thing; OoTS has had hundreds of strips to develop its cast, and LFG has 150.

But to actually quote Richard:
"I'm not really getting a feel for who you are."
