So I see alot of ads on this site for online rp games...does anyone play them? are they any good? I am almost tempted to find out myself but I just fixed my comp and the last thing I need is crap invading my systems.
Legendaryratboy
I played Adventure quest for a while, it was decent, but in order to get the really good stuff you have to suscribe and I'm just not willing to pay for something like that... which is part of why I don't play any MMORPGS.
Darkhawk
i think for the post part you can trust them, since sohmer and company are smart people, and wouldn't knowingly put ad's to things with viruses and such.....but, you can't know about EVERYTHING.

I personally haven't tried any of them, and I'd guess to actually have fun, you need to *subscribe* ....which probably isn't' worth it. /shrug
Grym
If you've never played an MMORPG before, I suggest Runescape as a good starting point.
Eleora
Ads? I use scriptblocker. I hate online advertising with a passion.

But for some reason when I visit here I feel guilty.

Not that it'll make me unblock them..but they say it's the thought that counts.

Out of all the MMORPGs I've played..WoW is by far my favourite, although decent RP that doesn't involve nasty stuff is getting harder and harder to find on my server.

AHMAHGADS, VAMPIREZ, lolz. -.-;

To be honest, I found the best MMO for RPG was LOTRO, but it does sometimes mean having to go and actively study things like languages and history rather than flicking through like y'can for wow. It's really heavy stuff..but great fun all the same.

I keep meaning to try adventure quest..just..never get around to it.
Darkhawk
if you like RP THAT much, these forums have a section for it, with a decent fan base, tongue.gif

Be careful though, you may contract uncurable geekyness (fortunately I have a vaccine called excersise).
MantaLord
Puzzle Pirates is the one Mamorpaga Ad that I have actually clicked... And it turns out that it is bloody addicting.
Legendaryratboy
Mamorpaga? is that some kind of greek monster?
MantaLord
MMORPG. Coined by Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw.

That vaccine is worse than the disease.
Legendaryratboy
By excersise I didn't mean "go every day for three hours, run on a treadmill, do some weights, and go back home feeling like you want to destroy a small galaxy exercise" I meant going hiking once a week, kayaking, rafting, climbing, biking, etc.

(btw, I still want to destroy a small galaxy, but for unrelated reasons)

Legendaryratboy
then don't exercise, quid pro quo.
Grym
You know it's possible to be a geek and be in shape, right? I'm in shape, and I'm a total dork.

You obviously don't know Verbose and his intense hate of nature and trees.

Go die. Try Dragon Fable or Maple Story. Both are free and relatively decent. Runescape is all around hated by any good gamer, sorry Grym.
MantaLord
I'm a good gamer, and I got my starting point in Runescape... It's really good at teaching ye the basic mechanics of an MMO, from grinding to questing...

They're up to something.

I'm sure of it.

I've tried Battle Knights, and Gladiatus. I stopped playing both, very loose rules on harrassment, and griefing.

The only thing I still play is Tribal Wars, Cyber Nations, and Off-Road Velociraptor Safari(not typically in those random ad banners).

I also play a little downloaded game called Harpooned: Japanese Cetacean Research Simulator, where you kill the whales rather than save them. It's a side to side shooter.
Legendaryratboy
Sounds like good, old fashioned, family fun (as defined by TEP).

I also played tribal wars but gave up after loosing my fifth consecutive village...
viper2003923
if you wanna try a good free MMORPG to start with, try conquer online the first links to download it, heres the actual site

I'll probably stop playing Tribal Wars before too long, went from about 10 villages down to 2 during a local war. It was too time consuming to keep them up, and be on guard. I still haven't unlocked all the accomplishments in the velociraptor game, been spending the last few weeks trying to beat the record for most raptors killed(35), best I can manage is 28.

I'm in the top 15% of Cyber Nations players though.
viper2003923
raptor hunters actually pretty fun, that game isn't that bad
Pariah
I'd suggest Nation States, or KOL, as they don't take a lot of concentration to have fun, and don't cost REAL money to get the awesome stuff. Nation States does not even need anything besides a keyboard, mouse, and one functional limb, as it is a all about your decisions, and it takes one day to confirm them, during which time you may alter them.
(Sorry about any typos, I am tired and my hands are shaky)

Games For Windows magazine routinely has cool freebies in the back of the magazine. The velociraptor game is the best one I have seen them advertise, though during primetime the game can lag making it difficult to accomplish much. Most lag free times I have found are between 3 & 5 am eastern.
viper2003923
did you happen to notice that the driver of the raptor safari happens to BE a raptor!?
JacobChulainn
Nah, it's a guy in a raptor costume.
viper2003923
really? oh well

Closest I'll ever come to a MMORPG is Navyfield. Mildly annoying at times, but I find it fun for the most part.
Not to mention free ^.^
Verbose
I've played three in my time.

One was fun but if you advanced too quickly the people at the top would destroy you before you could threaten them. Another one I spent all my time stealing money off new people and locking it in my bank. The third one had aliens and slowly became a game you really needed to pay for.

The Aeria Games can hold my attention for about a month or two, 12 Sky for instance. It's a bit repetitive on the combat aspect but the pvp was pretty fun.

I grew up on PC games...Warcraft series, Starcraft, Ultima Online, Asheron's Call, WoW, Runescape, yada yada....and as much fun as WoW is....it's getting to be extremely boring...I hear AoC is good but I won't play it...and I hear that Warhammer when it comes out is going to be a HUGE hit...
MantaLord
URU Live used to be the best MMO ever... But then they Frakkin' CANCELLED IT! Bloody Morons who can't see the true genius...
JacobChulainn
Ultima Online 2 was slated for release the same year development of WoW began, but was cancelled. It was going to feature mounts, and a few of the enemies look like enemies in WoW.

Even the orc bunker during the video looks very familiar.

I never was the one to look for "the next best thing". When it came to games, I usually pirated them for a week to test them out (Demo versions are just rip offs), and if I liked them, I bought them. If not, then I just hit the magic DELETE button.

I never look for the next big hit either.....UO bored me when I hit 10...so we went to AC...I stopped playing when I was 14 because I found new hobbies...My sister actually got me back into gaming at 16..Hence why I picked up WoW....and even then, I don't play that much anymore and probably won't until WOTLK.

wow died. most people left, or don't play as much anymore. it'll be half revived by the xpac, but i doubt it'll be enough to keep most of the people that used to enjoy it.
Kimira
Ohhh Dark I couldn't agree with you more.
I3lind
In retro spec, they need to not do another expansion after WotLK, but instead create a new game. Maybe advance it in time, or take it back a lot and make people start from scratch. (none of this easy to power lvl bullshit that means you beat the game in a month.) Hell, maybe even a SC mmo. I will probably switch over to WAR when it comes out, (im a big 40k fan geek, but anything GW is cool with me) but ill still probably buy WotLK.
Kimira
I agree I3lind....Too many expansions for one game justs ends up killing it...I def like the idea of going back in time with it..That I think we'd be worth playing.
I3lind
Yay, so im not the only one. That and we would get a more official view of past events that lead to the world of azeroth.
viper2003923
i think a SC MMO would be a cool idea for like the zerg your under the control of kerrigan, terrans under jim raynor, and protoss under whats his face
Legendaryratboy
Do not say anything about a SC MMO ever again, or I will be forced to take inspiration on The Sandman and do very nasty things to you.

The problem with WOW is that they took a RTS universe and tried to turn it into a RPG universe, if you're making any type of game, you have to either create it from scratch, or stick to the original gameplay and expand on it. Crossing over into another genre is a one way ticket to suckdom.

Also, they made it physically impossible for there to ever be another RTS Warcraft game ever, way to kill a franchise that's actually good.

hah. wow as a whole wasn't terrible. going from the RTS to an RPG made them a TON of money, and it wasn't a bad game for a long while. they just slowly over time made it worse and worse, and their ways to bring it back to life either aren't working, or won't work. too little, too late.

Unless it's Myst, right? (Say yes and you will not get hurt...)

WoW started out te-awesome rat, for shame on that comment. It just gets old after i dont know, a couple years of the same thing and constant nerfing.

And on a personal note, myst and all of its sequel are boring! Bring the pain tongue.gif
Legendaryratboy
Look closely and you will notice that I never once said it sucked to begin with. The problem can just as easily creep in over the years as be immediate.

Also, I may be a bit biased as I play RTS games more than anyrthing, but since everyone else seems to play RPGs more than anything, it balances out.

It was entirely possible that they wouldn't have done it the way you liked anyway.

Reality was that by the time they made Warcraft 3, they were making it all up anyway. Clearly they've shown they can make up an adequate story to fit a game around so you might not get another Warcraft game but you'll get more RTS games from Blizzard.
