Did any 1 else except me realise the subtile resemblence between Richard and Jack ? except for the fact that richard is a criminal they both present the same wit and subtile ingenuity sometimes going over the line Also the stories are starting to become similar maibe the writers were somewhat inspired by such stories i predict the new page being only with richard in that plane trying to get out and finding an absurd way out of there.. maibe praying laugh.gif

Btw, jack sparrow isn't really someone I'd call a pathelogical, bloodthirsty, homicidal maniac, he's just a bit insane. So I say nah.

*groan* Jack Sparrow has been mentioned in the discussion thread for page 148 (Thursday's update). The thread is there for a reason.

As for similarities between Richard and Captain Sparrow... no. I don't see very many, except that they both don't like to follow orders, change plans on a whim, and are prone to making sarcastic remarks. But that's pretty basic, isn't it? Tavor and Benny like to make snarky remarks, too. Heck, the above description would fit Downer too (the drow rogue in my avatar picture). Or the vampire Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series.

Apart from the obvious fact that Jack isn't undead and can't cast spells, Richard and Captain Sparrow's personalities don't match.

Jack Sparrow is a rake, a womanizer, a gambler, a drunk, a scoundrel and a liar, but he does have some sense of personal honour, and he follows the pirate code. And he doesn't go out of his way to kill people just for the thrill of killing. He doesn't actively try to sabotage his friends' efforts. He isn't mean just for the sake of being mean. Jack just wants to get drunk, get laid, and get very rich (not neccessarily in that order)... and to have his ship, because a captain without a ship doesn't get respect.

Richard is a callous, compulsive homicidal sociopath and psychopath. In his view, rules don't apply to him and everyone and everything in the world exists only to provide stimulation and amusement to him, and his greatest amusement is gruesomely killing people who cannot fight back and listening to the sobs of their grieving relatives while he incinerates their houses. (Proof: the text of "Slaughter the World".) Richard lives for destruction and pain and likes to sabotage Cale's efforts to keep the peace. On the other hand, Richard's not even remotely interested in sex and seduction (he's undead, people! If I ever see Richard putting the moves on a living creatures of any gender, I'm going to spork my eyes out!).

Richard and Jack Sparrow both like to brag with their titles ("It's Captain Sparrow!") and their questionable deeds. They're both a bit vain and like to be flattered (but then who doesnt?). But Richard tries to suck up to people who are powerful (quotes: "I'm Richard." (twice!) - "My new best friend is the guy who just tackled a Dragon."). Jack Sparrow on the other hand couldn't care less if you're a king or a beggar.

Jack likes to pretend he sneers in the face of danger, but he isn't too proud to run away when he's outnumbered, and he often tries to bluff and lie his way past obstacles. Richard on the other hand is straight-forward ("I mean you harm.", "I like to kill things.") and doesn't seem to have a danger sense at all; somewhat understandable given that Richard can be damaged or dismembered, but isn't effectively unkillable by normal weapons or spells.

If there's a character you can compare Richard to, it's Xykon the undead lich sorcerer from Order of the Stick.

Like stated above, I don't think Jack Sparrow and Richard are similar. Heck, Richard is more like Captain Jack Harkness than Captain Jack Sparrow.

Although if Richard was like Jack Harkness, he'd be hitting on Cale. wink.gif

Maybe Richard's aggression is just a way to hide his love for Cale? You know, like how you'd make fun of that one girl in Grade School because you didn't want your mates knowing you like her.

blink.gif Wha-? How are...? How is Captain Jack Harkness from Doctor Who and Torchwood in any way similar to Richard?? wacko.gif

If you had said Captain John Hart (the other time traveller from the 51st century, see Torchwood season 2), former buddy of Jack Harkness, a charming sociopath addicted to booze, drugs, sex and murder (incidentally played by James Marsters)... yeah I could have seen a vague similarity. But even John Hart is not as perversely enamoured of causing mass-death and destruction as Richard. He is primarily driven by selfish interests, but it's more Chaotic Neutrality instead of Chaotic Homicidal Evil.

Richard really only works because he, like Xykon, doesn't see himself as fundamentally human. All the little... stops that hold back most people except the most psychotic ones don't exist in Richard's mind.

More like a pet that Richard likes to abuse and maim at will, but that no-one else is allowed to touch.

{ Ironically, in real life, sociologists and the FBI looked at the childhood of serial abusers and mass-murderers diagnosed with psychopathy and have found a correlation between cruelty and callousness to animals in childhood and later cruelty and callousness to humans. If someone enjoys putting firecrackers into frogs and blowing them up (real-life example of someone whose name you all know), or cutting open life pregnant cats and laughing at the sounds they make while they die, it should be a first warning sign. Psychopaths lack empathy. The enjoy having the power to hurt and control others. }

But I know what you mean. Unfortunately, I have been "that girl", at least twice, back in school. dry.gif

Of course, if we are discussing sociopaths and psychopaths, you should also mention, at least in passing, that although they do not experience empathy, nor many other emotions, the vast majority are a category lost in the shadows thrown by their violent counterparts... those who not only lack those emotions, but feel no sort of compulsion for "power", nor the vaguest interest in hurting people OR animals - they are just... different, and separate. Most are not of a violent persuasion at all, and in fact, most people who ARE labelled "sociopaths", and considered to have "no empathy or emotions", who harm others and animals in such a manner, in fact are not. These people frequently DO have empathy, and get a perverse thrill in abusing their own empathy and emotions through the abuse of others, enjoy feeling such strong pain in their own emotions, caused by their actions. Twisted, hard to understand for many people, but true nonetheless.

And back on topic - no. not Sparrow in the least. Honestly, what IS going through some peoples' minds, that makes them make such connections? I just cannot follow the path, the train of thought that leads from thought A to thought B sometimes, because some people tend to use an alphabet from some alien planet in some other dimension, which wedges 12 new characters and a summer home in the bahamas in between those innocent starting letters in our own, simple system.

Lol.
