Full Version: Question for the moderators

There's a good reason I'm asking this. There's this annoying, arrogant, bratty n00b on my home forum that won't quit spamming (the underadmin there hasn't been on today yet and hasn't seen the mess.), and today I found she likes to edit admin warnings on her profile. Yes, her profile; the board has a similar comment thing like this one, except the user who owns said profile can edit/delete posts at a whim.

Usually we tell the users to shape up or ship out, or be banned by force. Usually, most people either quit spamming or leave. Most comments with warnings are like this:

"Read the rules; they're not that hard to find.

[linktoruleshere]
[linktoruleshere]

If you do this again, you'll get an infraction; when you get three (3) infractions, you will be banned for a week. After that, three (3) more infractions means a month-long. After that, a year long, and if you persist, it will be permanent."

Or, from our funnier moderator (not me, I have no moderator powers. I lend them my frying pan.):

"Look you loon, read the rules or I'm going to hit you with a frying pan. Yes, you heard me, A FRYING PAN. Also, don't message me again saying I'm a nasty b*tch; can't take the heat, get outta my kitchen."

^That message was to a user who eventually received a year-long ban after repeatedly harassing said moderator.

Anyway.

This user I'm speaking of - the arrogant brat one - posts multiple threads on the same subject - What do you like More is an obnoxiously popular theme for her, and it's gotten irritating as there's joint threads based on the subject. - and also for some reason tried to prove that extremely greasy pizza (e.g., the grease literally runs off the slice in rivers.) is actually healthy for her, but truth was she proved herself wrong. That got her banned the first time after she proceeded to harass all users involved.

Not only has she posted multiple threads, she's posted an Online Dating Matchmaker thread. I don't care if people want to online date, but that board's for kids 10 and up for god's sake. Who's going to date on there? -__-

And she changed the above two messages to something like the following:

"hi im *usernamehere* and *spammersusernamehere* is the nicest user online"

And this is what she did to the underadmin's:

"hi im *usernamehere* and im a mean nasty modorrator that hates *spammerhere* bcuz shes so awesome"

And this is what she did to mine (Original was simply "Stop spamming."):

"hi im nily and ur so awsum."

WTF. Just. WTF.

Anyway, she's been warned time and time again to not be nasty; she's crossed the line.

So, as a question to the moderators of the LFG board, do you guys think that the moderator team there has to put up with nasty brats that act like this?

EDIT:

Question meaning, have idiot users seemed to hold the believe moderators/admins have to be nice constantly?

Users follow the rules, or the moderators ban them. Thats how it works in most forums I've been too. I'm not a moderator but thems the ropes.
Kayhynn
I moderate this forum and admin on Stratics and a few other forums.

Moderators do not have to put up with that sort of treatment. They are there to enforce the rules fairly and equally and not take sides except to punish the rule abusers.

When a user becomes a bigger issue refer the user to an admin.

Anyone here who changes mod edits gets an automatic suspension.
Nilly
That's how it usually goes over on my board, but the whole 'infraction' thing prevents instantaneous banning unless it's forwarded to the upper admin, who is rarely on anymore due to issues with the mainsite.
Kayhynn
For some sites I admin, it depends on the infraction as to instant/permanent ban. Spamming is perma. Linking to sites that are not allowed (Porn, gold selling, etc) are such ones that earn perma bans. Posting porn itself is perma. Most of the time people get warnings. For some things, such as repeated issues we see here with flaming, we gave several warnings publically, when those were ignored, we went for 24 hour vacations.

In many cases, on some forums, you have to be stricter because of the average age of users. The younger they are, the more chances they will push the limits of the rules or ride the rules just to where tehy are on the border of breaking them but not breaking them.
Nilly
We had this user who, after we banned her the second time, dragged her mom onto the board to spam it up for her; that was completely insane and the board was a mess for a few days.

Posting porn on that board is an instantaneous ban, as is linking to anything inappropriate, and we've never had trouble with gold selling sites. We've had a user come on and spam about some medical spa though; thankfully, the user's never come back after the initial two warnings.

Our problem with being strict is that a lot of the time they either make multiple accounts and pose as RL friends to get out of trouble, or they'll say 'this is so-and-so's sister/mom/etc., she won't do this again', then they come back three days later and start all over.

I don't know what your policy is on it...I know Stratic's policy is if it's the same IP and unless they can really prove that its a different person (You can usually tell by emails and comparison to posts if its a same person or not) we won't let them back. We will automatically ban any username created by that IP.
Nilly
Eventually we can, but only if there's been a year-long ban before that. We've only ever banned one user for a year, and that was because it/he/she was harassing a moderator repeatedly for not friending them. We usually have to get the upper admin involved, but it's hard to contact her because other users complain about the mainsite or stupid things like their pixel albums not working and it's near impossible to get her to sort IP bans out when we need them.
Kayhynn
Sounds like you need more than one admin.
Nilly
We do, but they're all dragged off by errors on the mainsite and users causing trouble. That's why we've got an under admin and five active moderators.
Kayhynn
I mean You need a web site admin a (Webadministrator) and 5 or so forum admins.
Nilly
To do that we'd need even more moderators, which (chances are) would be impossible, as many of our users are in the 12 year old range and throw fits. Also, we have a moderator that never comes online, and even when she does she doesn't post or even moderate her own section of the board. At one point she was bashing the underadmin for not being religious.
Kayhynn
Not necessarily more moderators, but just admin. And if a mod isn't around to do her job, time to give her the boot
Nilly
We can't get rid of her, that's the problem; she was just randomly appointed. We'd never even seen her on the board before her name popped up in the moderator list. In any case, we also need moderators because it seems like every time we get an under admin, they end up with RL troubles and disappear for months.

Kayhynn, to that thing about same IP's do familys who share Internet have the same IP, cause my bro who uses a different comp but same internet access might join.

Really?

Huh.

Why would anyone want to change them? It is to my shame that I've only ever had deletions or pity edits.
Kayhynn
I understand that. I also understand that no matter if its a brother/sister/dad/mom/whatever...people will also use that log in to repeat the same shit they did even if its not their computer....
