Earth Hour is an event that is happening March 29nth, and I feel it is important for us to act on it. When I was told about this event, I was asked the question, "Who do you know that you can effect that sucks up the most power?" My answer: The Nerds (and the Geeks). Who stays up at 12 A.M. playing Xbox360 live with several friends? The Nerds. Who looks at websites ceaslessly whenever they feel like it? The Nerds. Who has every nextgen console and plays them all? The Nerds. I'm sure there is many more but you get my point: We suck power like none other. If we take action to save the Earth, just a single hour, it would be one of the smartest things we've done. (Discounting LFG and the Titanium Spork.) During Earth hour we can turn off our lights, turn off the computers and game consoles we have, pray we don't get withdrawals and go outside singing "Kumbaya" in the candle-and-moonlight.(Maybe we could-gasp!-shut down the LFG server!) The official website is Earthhour.org and it can explain more and tell you what you can do to save the planet every day. (Not like, buying property and converting it into a sanctuary or make all-natural molotov cocktails and start a riot on loggers and oil tankers, but more like, turn off the lights and use daylight to see in your home, or, take showers that don't take 30 minutes.) I hope all of you will act- it will save the planet better than if you beat the Halo trilogy on all difficulties.
I3lind
I think i may just stay up extra late on this day, watching a movie while playing wow and listening to the radio under so much electrical lighting that i need sunglasses. I did this last year and didnt feel any better or worse about myself, nore did anything actually come out of it so this year im giving it the ignore sticker.

Grym
Now see, you obviously aren't a pure nerd. Y'know why? We're smart. We build nuclear reactors with hot glue guns and paper clips for fun.

What do you think is powering our houses?

I've known about Earth Day for years and years, but I had no idea there was such thing as Earth Hour. Cool beans. smile.gif

The planet doesn't really need any saving, the planet is just fine. It will be a here for a long long time to come after we're all dead and burried/burned. Some species living on it might be in for a little whiff of extiction, but don't worry to much about the planet itself.

Screw that. Necessity is the mother of all invention.

I say we screw this planet's capacity for viably supporting human life as fast as we can. In the ensuing need, we shall invent a way to fix the problem.

If we keep putting it off, nobody will do it. People work hardest the night before work's due.

That's only typical for men. I'm sure it's ok for some women too, but mostly men. Not a problem, men always do all the work for anything anyways wink.gif

You cant fix the economy or the environment by hitting it with a hammer.

Bush found that out the hard way.
Grym
But hammers are so much fun!
The Lone David
You can put out grease fires with them.

Bush found that out the hard way.

Yeah, but look at it this way.

His negligence to your nation's infrastructure has created a need. Somebody will fill that need.

It's a wonderful system. Just make sure you're on the wrecking team. A lot less pressure over there.
The Lone David
Unless you get trapped underneath.
CanadianWonder
I resent that, i'm a nerd and i am proud to be so, i dont waste energy, i conserve power by doing things in the dark, and at night i leave the lights off, i watch T.V. a little much, but EVERY person is an energy waster, have you ever NOT seen a person who wastes energy, exept for finatics and people who follow fads.
The Lone David
OH NOEZ! We're wasting energy right now! Everyone, turn off your computers!

Look at that, it didn't work. Verb must be right.
CanadianWonder
wow, your right, and right now i just got out of a 20 minute shower and have my light on, T.V. on, and arent even watching it with my face towards the comp, just to spite people....
Verbose
Then again, I hate nature.

I like to see her nose get smashed in.
CanadianWonder
yeah, we should say yo mamma nature jokes.

yo momma nature so hot she bees a deasert!
Grym
Besides, most of the lightbulbs in my house are fluorescent anyways.
Verbose
You know the really ironic part?

I actually hate leaving on lights and what have you. Everybody I know does it, they'll turn a light on to go through it and leave it on. I want to punch them. They can navigate in the darkness, it's not tricky.

It's just like how I agree with recycling. Not the kinds that help, nature, though. I mean the half that produces pollution to "reuse" stuff like plastic bottles that get ground into powder to make shit shoe laces. I can get behind recycling that serves no practical purpose and produces higher costs and pollution.
I3lind
About the light thing, really. How hard is it to turn off a light when you leave. Not that i really care much about the energy thing but in my house, i know i will be the one to replace the bulbs and not the roommates. Yes they are cheep but still. That and my bead room is right off the living room area and for some reason, the slightest thing can wake me up at night and it is just annoying to see light coming in under my door at 4 in the morning when i know no one has been out there for hours.

One: We are never to limit our use of electricity. Duh.

Two: If you find an alternative energy that rivals fossil fuels, excluding Nuclear Power coz it is not unlimited and it is not completely fullproof, then perhaps we'll help the planet.

Three: The best solution, thus far, is to develop Cold Fusion reactors, but that ain't gonna happen any time soon with our ignorance.

Ah, and here I thought Nuclear Power was a good move. I hadn't realised that fossil fuels are both unlimited and completely foolproof.

The reality is that Nuclear Power provides a maximum effect for a minimum input.

Huh, yeah I'm pretty sure Cold Fusion is impossible. We're just going to have to do fusion the hard way.

By dancing.
Verbose
The closest we'll ever get is dance fusion in the snow.

I know fossil fuels are limited, I meant that Nuclear Power is not unlimited as well. We just need a source of power that delievers the same amount or more of energy than of fossil fuels, but also is environmentally friendly. Of course political leaders of today don't care because we are not in a state of panic.

On topic, "earth hour" is basically a vain thing right now. We are a society based on technology and that technology is powered by some form of energy at the moment. Imagine if the United States put their technology on hold for an hour, we'd be screwed and be open for attack from anyone that hates us.

It's not just the political leaders.

The people don't care.

People don't really want to be environmentally friendly. They just want to think they're environmentally friendly. Recycling is great example. Some types are really good for the environment - recycling aluminium cans is great for the environment. Some types cause more pollution than dumping them - recycling paper burns more petrol carting it around and you get left with barrels of non-biodegradable ink left over that is far more toxic than when it was in the paper. People don't care about the reality, though. So long as they can feel better because they're helping, they feel great.

And nuclear power isn't actually that bad these days. Sure, you have radioactive waste left over but that's not hard to store and if you really want to spend the time and cash there are a couple of ways you can render it inert.

We can't "kill" the planet if we tried.

Hell, a simultaneous detonation of all the nuclear weapons on the planet would be the only shot we had at fucking the place up.

Short of that, we're just en route to causing another global extinction.

Wow, you respect inefficient and often unreliable sources of power?

No matter how up our collective ass humanity sticks its head, this planet has withstood who knows how many meteorites smashing into it and killing all the above-water life on the whole rock. I doubt we'll be causing more damage that that. I hate how dramatized our effect on the environment has become. It's almost worse to hear people whine about the future flooding of the globe than to hear the people say nothing's happening. Actually, it is worse.

Good thing I'm not trying to win any popularity contests then! But as Verbose pointed out, I was not saying we should go on polluting our environment, I was saying the planet is not in any need of rescue. If someone comes up with a good plan to make sure we got a nice and clean place to live for another couple thousand years, I'm all for it.
I do sometimes get a bit ticked off by people sprouting slogans about saving the planet. Most environmentalists don't care about the planet, they just want a clean planet so they and their kids can live on it a bit longer. But ofcource shouting: 'save the planet' sounds a whole lot more heroic and noble.

I won't deny I care about the planet because I'm afraid of the impact it will have on humanity. I'm worried what we will all be breathing in 50 years, I worry what will happen when we continue to throw off the carbon cycle enough to screw up out atmosphere and heat up the planet. And I worry what will happen when we've used our fresh water supply. And it's because I care about my own well being and the wellbeing of my family.

So that's why earth day needs to be more than just earth day. It needs to be always. For your own sake if not for the polar bears'.

Who cares about the polar bears? I thought it was rather amusing when I found out they floated out and drowned myself.

And as for Earth Hour, my school has a robotics team, of which I am a member and they're asking everyone on the team to participate. I for one refuse to. I'll probably turn off my lights, but I'll still be playing my 360 AND using my computer at the same time. I don't care about the environment because seriously, by the time it gets really bad, I'll be dead. Plus everyone dies so why not just screw things up for future generations to fix? I apologize if I offend anyone but those are my views and I stand by them.

I know some people working on an electric knife.

Twice the power.

If they utilised some sort of nuclear reactor in the hilt, I think they'd be on to what you want.

Uhm, I don't know how a sudden decline in the power usage, triggered by a simultaneous shutdown of a great many electronic devices can affect the stability of the circuits, the power lines, or maybe even overload the power lines?

Still, all those "once in a while reminder" actions like this seem to me like the thing that exits the bovine digestive system.

Consitency, people, consistency!

Doing a "good thing" like turning off a computer or buying a bouquet of flowers for your girlfriend once a year because there's some event going on is pure nonsense.

Not to mention you'll be using up almost as much power as you saved when everyone turns their lights and everything back on when it's over at the same time.
