MILWAUKEE - Gary Gygax, who co-created the fantasy game Dungeons & Dragons and helped start the role-playing phenomenon, died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva. He was 69.

He had been suffering from health problems for several years, including an abdominal aneurysm, said his wife, Gail Gygax.
Gygax and Dave Arneson developed Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 using medieval characters and mythical creatures. The game known for its oddly shaped dice became a hit, particularly among teenage boys, and eventually was turned into video games, books and movies.
Gygax always enjoyed hearing from the game's legion of devoted fans, many of whom would stop by the family's home in Lake Geneva, about 55 miles southwest of Milwaukee, his wife said. Despite his declining health, he hosted weekly games of Dungeons & Dragons as recently as January, she said.
"It really meant a lot to him to hear from people from over the years about how he helped them become a doctor, a lawyer, a policeman, what he gave them," Gygax said. "He really enjoyed that."
Dungeons & Dragons players create fictional characters and carry out their adventures with the help of complicated rules. The quintessential geek pastime, it spawned a wealth of copycat games and later inspired a whole genre of computer games that's still growing in popularity.
Funeral arrangements are pending. Besides his wife, Gygax is survived by six children.

If not, he can make it. I guess after all these years, he finally rolled a fumble.

This makes me so sad. I owe Mr. Gygax a great debt for the impact he made on my life. Not just because I adore his game (which I do) but because my husband and I met each other roleplaying. If it hadn't been for Dungeons & Dragons I wouldn't have met the person I've been happily married to for almost seven years now.
Thank you, Mr. Gygax. You made the world a happier place for a lot of us. ♥

Aw man

D&D gave me and my friends a lot of good laughs. *salutes the man responsible*

He shall be missed.
But I just may turn religious now, knowing who to pray to for 20's.

You mean Bahamut right? But yea, Gary will be missed. My friends and I are having a dice burning ceremony for him this weekend, each of us sacrificing a set of dice in his memory to burn.

This sucks.
I'm a horrible person for saying this, but does anyone else think 69 is a silly age to die at, or is it just my adolscence telling me that?

For everyone who ever got together with friends and shared laughter and smiles and good times over a gaming table, thank you Mr. Gygax, for making the world a better place with what you've given us. I'm taking this Spring Break off from WoW to play one more game with my old group.
We will, however, be replacing all instances of kuo-toa and sahuagin with murlocs.

I've never met Gygax in person, nor have I ever read an interview with him or stuff like that. I've only really knew he was one of the guys who created D&D (which I'm quite fond of), and nothing more.
Nevertheless, knowing of his death made me really sad.
R.I.P. Gary Gygax. Your work meant a lot for a lot of people.
