I'm a Latinist (a Latin-student, that is). Whenever someone says that the plural of forum is "forums", I growl to myself. The plural of all Latin words ending with -um is -a, therefore, the plural of Forum is Fora.

Likewise, whenever anyone mixes up communism and socialism, my temper flares. Communism is the idea that all of human history is marked by class struggle and that one day a worldwide revolution will overthrow the rich and create a worldwide commune. Socialism the idea that the government should tax rich people so it can enhance the living quality of the poor. I am a Socialist, and it's an insult to call me a communist.

Do you guys ever get annoyed by ignorant people from such minor issues, or is it just me?

[fora is the latin plural, but since the latin 'forum' and the internet 'forum' are two different things, 'forums' does work...]

edit: I'll rephrase that-------

In my opinion fora should only be used as a plural to forum ONLY when referring to the archaic, latin, meaning of the word. I agree that it's an acceptable form in the dictionaries, however, it does not conform to the english standard - and the electronic meaning of forum is most certainly a natural english word, thus making its sole acceptable plural forums.

the only thing that makes me upset is when people willingly believe things they hear from invalid sources (like, the communism:socialism thing you were talking about).

Then explain why the plural of cactus is cacti and antenna is antennae (even in English).

When those medieval Englishmen established this "Let's take both the singular forms and the plurals from Latin", they weren't kidding. It's irresponsible for newer generations to go changing that.

edit: Excuse me, have to edit this later to match with YOUR edits.

I will point out this isn't the only area English contradicts itself in favor of stupidity. Most people don't know forum is Latin so reasoning with this ignorance in mind it only makes since that people would make forum plural with and "s" instead of calling it fora.

Because english sucks! It's intricate (and other adjectives) when it wants to be, but it's got to be the most broken language in the world.
I never wanted to defend the english language, don't take it that way. But if someone is suggesting a new rule, the old ones have to be looked at.

Don't worry, it won't be for too much longer.

Of course, the inconsistency is because we're speaking English, not Latin. If you want to remove all the Latin-based words from our language for being misused, you're trying to take a little over half of them. And while we're at it, why not get rid of all the Greek words people think are Latin? I mean, it's just as silly to hear people pluralise octopus to octopi as to hear forum to forums.

All languages have a lot of this. English has a lot more than the others because it's the most successful. It's successful because it takes words from wherever it needs them. These days, we don't incorporate Romance languages or Germanic languages but we are picking stuff up from Japanese (especially) and a lot of Asian languages.

It's how language works. It's a living process. No language has ever been as neat as people like to imagine and no language ever will be. We use, adapt and abandon words as we go. Latin isn't a dead language, it's become other languages. French, Italian and Spanish are all direct descendants from Latin. Why don't you complain about them messing up their language? We're a Germanic language. If you want to come in here and complain about all the Old German words we've ruined, have at it. But you'd be wasting the same amount of time and energy for the same gain (which is nothing).

Whining about this is like complaining that the tide reforms the coast.

I just get ticked from people who think they have to correct someone on every little thing even though it has no significance on his/her or your life. And will never cause a death in this world.

Like grammar, spelling, speech, etc. Just drop it and live life happily, let them do it how they want to.

mellow.gif I agree. People who are constantly correcting other people when they, themselves, have much about their lives that can be corrected. I believe it was a crazy man that once said: "Don't cast the first stone, it's not pretty." Or was it... "Judge not, let ye be judged." Something along those lines.

And it's an artificial language that isn't really usable. And even then, it's probably just an adapted existing language. Not many people have the linguistical chops to break out a self-contained system of spelling and grammar.

I never really saw the appropriateness of that. If you can't correct someone else when they make a mistake because you're not perfect then nobody can ever correct or judge anybody.

When have I ever suggested removing the words? I only want them to be pluralised correctly, in the way they have been for thousands of years.

When a practice that works, such as the pluralising of these words, is established and used for generations upon generations, why change it?

If that's your case, you should be learning Middle English at the least.

After all, that worked for generations.

It's impractical to ask for these types of things to be even remotely enforced. Especially with a language as morphologically flexible as English. After all, if at any time you need to bend a word in a way it normally doesn't (or if you can't remember how it is suppose to) we can just smash words together or bend them to make them fit.

I actually prefer a flexible language than something more rigid. It lets you be more exactish.

Socialism the idea that the government should tax rich people so it can enhance the living quality of the poor. I am a Socialist, and it's an insult to call me a communist.

This is actually one of those little things that bug me, so much so that I had to register just to post about it... It bugs me when people take their beliefs and pretend that they reflect the entirety of the idea that title actually encompasses. For instance, Socialism has many different branches, and a very good number of those branches don't believe that "the government should tax rich people so it can enhance the living quality of the poor," nor do I like it when people oversimplify.

Also, the way we write the English language has in no way been established and used for generations and generations. If you look back to the turn of the 20th century, the way they write bears a good similarity to our own style, but jump back another century and you'll see that there was very little true agreement on proper writing technique except based on phonetics, which change quite readily with region and time.

Very well then, mister nitpick, let me fix that:

Accourding to Wiktionary, socialism is:

1. Any of various political philosophies that support social and economic equality, collective decision-making, and public control of productive capital and natural resources, as advocated by socialists.
2. The socialist political philosophies as a group, including Marxism, libertarian socialism, democratic socialism, and social democracy.
3. (Leninism) The intermediate phase of social development between capitalism and full communism. This is a strategy whereby the State has control of all key resource-producing industries and manages most aspects of the market, in contrast to laissez faire capitalism.
4. (Classical Marxism) The international communist society where classes and the state no longer exist.

The way I see it, the main thing connecting all the different philosophies that call themselves "socialist" is improving the life quality of the lower classes. About two thirds of these philosophies present the main way of doing this to be the high tax rates, and in most cases, tax rates increasing as incomes increase.

Now I hope I didn't ruin your life again by trying to make it simple enough for the random passers by.

I like how you quote a definition to prove your point, but the definition does nothing of the sort. Note how many of those definitions even mention the word tax. Mostly socialist beliefs actually center around state-run economies, not high-taxes. In practice, though, it seems that only your version of socialism has been recognized on a government-level, recently.

It doesn't really matter what English-speaking nation you're from. You aren't taught English grammar.

Hell, if you don't learn another language (inflective languages are especially good at teaching you English grammar via contrast), you never get taught. For some reason, educators of old seemed to think that just because we all speak the language that we understand it.

They were wrong, for the most part.
