That sketch is really nice, Redington. The only thing I can criticize (and I'm no sketch artist so my opinion doesn't count for much) is that the left eye seems a bit too far away from the nose. Maybe that's just the viewing angle though. Some things look really weird or out of proportion when viewed at a certain angle.

I wish I had practiced and learned to make detailed sketches, but drawing was never something in which I was interested. It would help me design some more intricate glass items. Right now I'm just sort of winging it, based on what I feel like doing that day. The more detailed items really need more preparation and a design on paper to follow, rather than guessing where certain elements are going to go or how big each part or design should be for the best effect. The super-secret TLAR method ("That Looks About Right" laugh.gif) isn't good enough for a serious attempt at something meaningful. I can get some nice stuff by just playing around, but the really nice glass art needs to be planned out.
Redington
I know. That is my current problem I have with my sketches. I get the placement and proportions a little bit wrong.

Then again, I pretty much have winged all my sketches thus far. I did have some training from taking art classes in high school. But I've mostly forgotten what the hell we did in those classes (though, I do remember having this one art class that had this pretty hot teacher).

I should be an arts major... what the hell am I doing...
euology
I am an arts major. I guess the only thing art school did do for me, was at the time put me in contact with alot of people. Some who made it... Some who didn't.

I know a handful of folks that work at dreamworks, pixar, toy companies you name it!.. but I know ALOT more really good artists who just didn't make it to that lvl. I learned pretty fast, that I wasn't that amazing LOL. Heck I have a good friend, known this kid 10 years all he wants to do is storyboard and doodle the rest of his life (asshole stole my dream LOL). He like me still work at the art college we attended, but at least he did put out his own webcomic recently. So at least he's doing something he loves and shareing it with strangers. Ya know?

Personally I just never had an "edge" that made me stand out from others art wise. I found I was a better art director than artist in the end. I had an eye for quality. Sure that's fine and dandy an all, but at the same time... meh. LOL

Oh I know full well that I am not anywhere near close to standing out against the rest of everybody that's trying to make a living off of their artwork. And I probably won't even be going to a art-school or whatever because I just don't have the money for it. Usually having no job would do that for you.

But I was thinking maybe the current direction I'm heading now can incorporate somewhat my artwork into it. And hopefully I'll be able to get by that way. Though, in the current swing of things, I have a long way to go.

Though, would you say I have a chance perhaps? Just curious as to where I fall in the scale of things...
euology
I think incorperating art into everything is awesome. Heck, I work at an art school the one I attended no less but I work in IT. In 10000000 different ways I've added art to my job, I design all our flyers, all our pamplets our tech website and alot more.

For years at this job I felt that it was lacking the design that should be associated with an art college, yes we're IT but even art school IT needs a bit of art. Not just information tacked up to a bulletin board heh.

You got a natural knack for it, I'd suggest some things tho.

You work in pencil mostly from what I can tell. Do you use the light blue (or red) pencils to do you pre-sketch work? If not I'd def recommend getting a couple and giving them a try biggrin.gif. Their nice so you don't have hoards of smeary lead on the page when you're doing all you starter sketch work. After you get all the fundamentals of the drawing down in blue or red then rework your lines in lead or ink biggrin.gif

Blue Pencil -these are the ones I use normally, their the non-photo blue pencils (basically they don't show up much when photocopying something). I love em, they come in red too!
Redington
I work mainly with pencil and paper because that's all I have.

I've never used blue or red pencils to preliminary sketchings. I should probably give it a try.

Most of the time, I just wing it.

Redington, you draw some great faces. cool.gif
I know you don't like the way some of them turned out, but I really like them; they're unique.
A realistic pencil sketch is nice and takes time and skill, but seems unimaginative since the artist is usually just copying what they see as precisely as possible.
Caricatures are not realistic, of course, but nearly all of them are in the same basic style; a sort of "let's just throw this together for laughs and not worry too much about realism, shading or detail". They're amusing, but too predictable.
You manage to do both in the same sketch, and quite well. It looks like it could be a real person who just happens to have a very rubbery face, like Jim Carrey.
euology
Going to attempt to add another guide today, any suggestion please let me know, tho currently I'm thinking of doing a "walk cycle" how to animate in 2d guide. Was thinking maybe a "forced perspective" guide but I fail at perspective on a few lvls. Dunno just yet, It will depend on how busy it is at work heh.

I tend to avoid realism at all costs, mostly because I suck at it. My style is cartoony to say the least.

I LOL'd at the Skinner drawing, just so you know. XD But yeah, I totally forgot Ordain had orangey hair... huh. I fail. Ordain actually looks pretty cool. O.o; I can see what you meant about the abs though, eh, what can you do.
niarBaD
lol, Beautiful drawing of Skinner. You should ask Rayne about my awesome drawing of Ravus.
Rayne
Yes, niar, that was such an amazing piece of artwork you did. Michelangelo would be feeling inadequate in comparison to the beauty.

Practice? I unno. I think I'm gunna try drawing some other characters of mine, though I want to do it in a simpler style. I way over did it with Chrysalis, but under did it with Demeter. Ordain came out the best of all of them I think. Maybe Skinner. But I love Witch and how she came out, I need to channel you. *meditates*

Well it is a great picture, it has excellent detail it's not static and an expression other than serious face. The only critique I could give is the neck looks a little thin, however that's common in elven drawings.

Yeah, the way i draw necks is kinda anatomically incorrect sometimes. Been working on it, though, as well as other things. I've been drawing faces long enough, so now i've finally moved on to anatomy. Luckily, i started really studying on drawing proper body structures the same time i decided to go into a Nursing career, and i'm about to start an Anatomy and Physiology class, so that might actually help me quite a bit.

And thanks for the positive stuff. I try really hard to make it so that you can almost see the character in the picture move.. For me, in this picture, i can almost see his smile grow, causing his eyes to narrow slightly as smiling can do. As well as him tilting his head slightly.

But thank you. ^^

Ya my biggest problem is keeping them from being static... and for some reason I have a terrible time with legs.

lol it's Kite.

or Shugo, depending on the context..

And yeah, you're much better at arms and hands than i am. Mine end up looking like twigs with joints. It's Pinocchio!

You also seem better at folds in clothing. That's another thing i've been working on..

oh it's ok. ^^ everyone does that sort of thing sometimes.

For me, it's drawing different jobs from the Final Fantasy Tactics Advance guide, without tracing. Fairly good copies. >> Kinda helped, through muscle memory i guess, with learning a little about anatomy.

Oh those weren't traced ether... not only are they about twice as big as the originals they're drawn on paper that's almost impossible to trace with.

oh, i can tell they're not traced. Tracings are really obvious.

I was just mentioning that i didn't. XD People thought i did for a while when they saw my copied pictures.

Even though i had drawn them on thick note cards. I was living in arizona at the time, though, and people they're are about as smart as lemmings.

One thing i hate is, because i draw in an anime style, everyone assumes i'm drawing fanart.

"So what show's he from?"

normally that's followed by the suggestion that he's from Yu-Gi-Oh! from the really ignorant..

Nooo, Runya is mine and mine alone he's not from tv.. yet.. ;_; I made him up all by myself..

i don't even draw fanart, to be honest. ugh. Why does everyone assume it's fanart when it isn't?

Well to be completely fair again, when I can't find my muse I draw something from... .hack// or something else, to them it looks like Yu-Gi-Oh or Pokemon, but that's because they have no clue what else it could be.

Try starting the line of your character in an S shape. Then shape in the character from the torso down so you can get a feel for weight and motion.

I posted up a guide somewhere, it wasn't great but a good enough example I suppose. smile.gif

You aren't alone, I'm still in the planning stages of what will inevitable be a huge picture of human puppets each holding the strings to another while having their own strings coming off various parts of their bodies. Marionettes ftw.
