Can't do Dutch but hopefully this should help.
Historically a warlock was the name given to a male witch - ie someone who made a deal with the devil in return for earthly power. In most gaming circles a warlock is classically a demon summoner and controller of demonic forces.
Games tended to vary what a warlock could do, such as ice/fire/necromancy etc but the general rule of thumb was that warlocks are evil. Most magic classes had good, bad and indifferent but warlocks were just plain nasty....... sounds a bit like a flying Dick we all know

Okay big guy, settle down with the agressivity and flamming. Talking out of your ass isonly going to give you one massive case of bad breath. Voice your opinion all you want but respect that of others.

I'm pretty sure the term "warlock" actually came from fiction and is in no way historical.
A male witch is still called a witch, and witches gain their power from nature. o.O They don't even believe in the devil.

Warlocks zijn, onder historische christelijke tradities, het mannelijke van heksen (gewoonlijk in de pejoratieve zin van de Middenleeftijden) van Europa te zijn en werden gezegd hooivorken inplaats van bezemstelen te rijden die normaal heksen zouden rijden. In traditionele Schotse tovenarij was "warlock" en is eenvoudig de termijn gebruikte voor een tovenaar of mannelijke heks.

The word warlock either comes from the Old Norse word 'varð-lokkur' meaning 'the caller of spirits' or it comes from the Old English word 'wǣrloga', meaning 'deciever' or 'oathbreaker'. My bets on the Old English one. The Oxford English dictionary says "Warlock v1 Obs. (ex. dial.) rare, also warloke: To secure (a horse) as with a fetterlock. Warlock v2: To bar against hostile invasion.
It dates back to the Middle Ages, the word was used by Christians to define the male equivalent of a witch.
They rode.. pitchforks..... instead of brooms...

*snerk* Pitch forks? Like what angry mobs carried when they chase them? XD
Warlock: *sees angry mob coming after him, glances around for an escape, punches first peasant he sees, grabs pitch fork and books it outta there*

These post both say that a warlock is considered a male witch (mannelijke heks), but the Dutch translation has a different story. It basically says that warlocks flew atop of pitchforks (hooivorken) instead of brooms (bezemstelen), according to historic christian traditions. If religion dreams up stuff like this it makes more sense to be an atheïst eh? Just thought I'd offer a translation to those who don't understand the second quote.
Edit: Damn, haven't red the whole thread. This was already discussed, my bad

yeah not all games where warlocks command fire/ice/and demons...in WoW warlocks only get dark/fire/and demons which by the way is cool because they get a spell call fear, thanks to their darkness spells
