Alright, this topic has no merit.
Sohmer and Lar are both Canadian (at least I THINK Lar is)
YET THEY SPELL WITHOUT U'S
(Labor instead of Labour, Honor instead of Honour)
Controversy?
Discuss!
Or you know... Don't.

I don't care, I'm neither so I have to know both

but I'm all for pointless discussions!
Maybe they just say they're from Canada to avoid being beaten by angry obsessive fans!

Maybe, and I'm just thinkin out loud here, they use a spellchecker that was made in the US?
Or, on the other hand, maybe their american FBI agents spying on Canada!!

They're doing it just for the hell of it. Soon as one of them reads this, I'm betting that they'll throw some u's intot he text just to psych you out.

Perhaps they are canadian, and not french canadian? I know quite a few in BC and SK (and some Minnasotans too) who do not use the "U"s in those silly words of the English language. Maybe it's because it looks less snooty.

That'd be CIA not FBI.
But I definitely wouldn't put it past them to start throwing u's in there for the fun of it. After all...

I always thought it looked more snooty (or snootier?) using the u's. Color/colour... I dunno.
Either way, I don't like Minnesota.

I'm in agreeance on the whole snooty thing, especially if anyone bothers correcting you.

I'm too lazy to read the entire thread to see if anyone already said it, but doesn't depend on various things.
I.E. Shop and Shoppe, English people generally spell things differently from us lazy americans.

Ha ha...
That is kinda funny.
But Shoppe? Why do you need 2 p's. It can't sounds right that way. Wouldn't it have to be pronounced Shop-peh or something?
Sure there's other double letters, but they still work. Like Swimming: Swim-ming.

I'm afraid I have to disagree. People are already butchering English badly enough as it is. We don't want to hasten the inevitable slaughter of our tongue by killing some of the few people that truly know how to speak it.
Instead I vote we sacrifice some of those poor souls that are too l337 for their own bloody good. We'll be doing the world a favor.

i think we should ask Richard what he thinks about this...

Personally, I'm from Oregon USA and I use the U's. I don't quite know why. Labour always just felt right to me.

Linguists are only useful for whining and documenting about changes in speaking and writing.

Why is it a controversy?
Dropping extraneous letters sounds like a grand idea to me.

I live in western New York, and I use the u's. I think I only started because it ticked off my old english teacher, but she couldn't do anything about it. So it slowly crept into my common spelling.

Forget the U's...Lar had a few words for me for bringing that up w/ LICD. However, he did correct the spelling of lightning on page 11. Yay!

I'm from the UK, so it just feels right for me to use the u's. It just looks better on paper imo
