Answer in the following template (which also presents my opinion):
CHARACTER NAME: Richard Rahl
[WHICH] FICTION [HE APPEARS IN], AUTHOR: The Sword of Truth books by Terry Goodkind
WHO IS HE: A forest guide who ends up being the emperor of the empire he fought against. He also carries the books' namesake sword.
WHY IS HE AWESOME: Well, first of all, he is the Chuck Norris of fantasy. If people at medieval fantasy settings knew what dividing by zero meant, Richard could do it.
Just to sum up his battle strength: He once ripped a man's spine out of his body trough his stomach, WHILE CARRYING THE PLAGUE.
That's how awesome he is.

Character Name: Rand al'Thor
[WHICH] FICTION [HE APPEARS IN], AUTHOR: Wheel of Time Series, by Robert Jordan
Who he is: He was born of a runaway Daughter-Heir(basically a princess) and a chieftain of Aiel(seen as savages, yet very moral fighters). We has adopted by farmers (adopt is used loosely, since his mother was killed by giving birth and his father was nowhere to be found). He was then forced to run from his home farm because he and 2 other friends of his were suspected to be the prophesied Dragon Reborn. He turned out to be the Dragon Reborn (a very powerful sorcerer, basically).
Why he is awesome: How the story goes, there is the True Source, which is divided up between Saidar(Female half) and Saidin (Male Half). Saidin is tainted by the Dark One, which drives any man who channels it(without his protection) insane. He was able to use Saidin without going insane (For the most part) and eventually got around to cleansing Saidin. That and he carries around his sword Callandor, which looks like its made of crystal, and it amplifies the amount of Saidin Rand can channel.
Just to sum up his battle strength: There is little he really can't do. Throughout most of the series he simply uses his One Power-forged sword, with the skill of a master thanks to his training. Though he eventually gets to the point of using Saidin for most of his battles. He has created Death Gates, which are basically spinning doors that send anything that gets caught in them to a random place in the world, dead of course. Calling lightning from the sky to tear through enemies. And my personal favorite, Balefire, and when evoked, summons a blindingly bright beam of "liquid light" that is capable of destroying nearly every known substance. The real danger of balefire, however, is that it can undo (or erase) the past actions of anyone it hits.
Now how can you beat someone, who can tear you from existence?

They meet many of Aahz's old friends, kill a few evil badasses, and become the most well known business in the Bazzar. Him and Aahz become very rich and popular, mastering financial skills, aswell as magik.
Why he is awesome: With complete mastery over the energy lines that dictate the magician's power and a wide arsenol of spells at his disposal, Skeeve can (and has on many-a-occasion) taken down an entire army with a couple waves of his hand (and a little help from his friends)

Just to sum up his battle strength: He can levatate himself and rain death above via fiery explosions and conjured weapons.
Also he has a pet dragon... extra points for that!

Name: Rincewind
Fiction/Author: The Discworld Series, By Terry Pratchett
Who is he?: The most inept wizard in the entire universe, totally incapable of magic, and his religion is stated to be "running away very fast"
Why is he awesome?: He has run away from guards, wizards, Lovecraftian nightmares, gods, Death, and various other unpleasant creatures. He first started his career of running away at age twenty and has never stopped since, even at his ripe old age of 75. He has been touched by so much magic, that even Death himself cannot tell when he will die. Rincewind also owns a magic box with legs that will follow him through any reality or afterlife and brutally murder his enemies. He is also responsible for saving the entire Discworld from doom more than five times. And he lived, didn't want to help, and got no reward ever. This is why he is the best. He also came back from hell itself, much like this thread.

I agree with this. He speaks jibberish and dances around like a retard, yet still he is the most awesome character in J.R.R Tolkien's universe.
Heck, in Battle for Middle Earth 2 he is a possible "summon". You'll "control" him for about 30 seconds. He just dances through enemies and punches them around like he's Sauron, and nothing ever defeats him. I once summoned him in the middle of an enemy base, having him showered by arrows, surrounded by hordes infantry. 30 seconds later, Tom Bombadil disappeared due to the time limit, and all enemy troops that attacked him was dead. Tom Bombadil is probably even stronger than the balrog...

Oh yes, Tom Bombadil rules all. XD
I guarantee this will be the girliest post in here as of yet, but... while he's not most awesome, I feel like mentioning him.
CHARACTER NAME: Julian (real name unknown)
[WHICH] FICTION [HE APPEARS IN], AUTHOR: The Forbidden Game Trilogy, L.J. Smith
WHO IS HE: A shadow man. A djinn. A dark, powerful spirit being. The big bad guy of the books, and the only of his kind with any decency.
WHY IS HE AWESOME: As a shadow man, Julian is able to use (old) stories, dreams, and thoughts to create nightmarish creatures and places, and to affect reality in much the same manner as a ghost. As the youngest (and self-proclaimed nicest) of his kind, he's also freakin' hawt - because he can be. XD And he's always using riddles and cruel games to try getting the main chick and her friends to give in.

CHARACTER NAME: Mr. M. Julian
[WHICH] FICTION [HE APPEARS IN], AUTHOR: The Story of My Life. Really. I'm writing it. Though it's also fiction because half of it is made up. Though this guy really used to be my 8th grade science teacher. No joke. That part's real.
WHO IS HE: An 8th grade science teacher.
WHY IS HE AWESOME: He is the best fucking teacher ever to walk the face of the Earth.
Just to sum up his battle strength: Once upon a 19 years ago, a student two feet larger and more muscular than Mr. Julian punched him in the face in anger. Defending himself, Mr. Julian got him in a chokehold and after a few seconds threw him at the wall, where he thusly had him pinned against said wall until the school cop came by.
A good 80% of it is true.
That's how uber my 8th grade Science teacher was. He made class fun, and today he reminds me of Dr. Cox from Scrubs.
