What made you think he had to be a mage to do it? I mean... he basically has all the powers of a mage, just... exponentially more powerful.

I think that in the comic, a "mage" is anyone who can use arcane magic, like a warlock. After all, when Benny was trying to pep talk Richard into opening the portal, she said, "Or we can find another mage who can". In other words, a warlock is just a sub-category of the mage class.

It's never come up in the comic, so we don't know. Nobody but SohLar knows anything that hasn't been addressed in the comic. They're very good at keeping secrets.
