Mythology of pop culture?

Do tell me more!
In Jibber-Jabber
Mythology of Pop Culture = the correlation between Greek Myth and Star Wars, etc. A lot of the same story telling methods and devices are used in both, and there's some interesting parallels between various myths and modern films, etc.

Hey there, I'm Kako! I've been reading LFG on and off since the start of the year or so, but I've only really gotten into it within the past month.

I'm an art student in Sonoma County, CA. While I love LFG's story, I have to say I mostly stay for Richard.

I'm practically infatuated with him, and take great joy in dancing around my house listening to Slaughter your World. XD

Well, I wouldn't say obsessed.

But he's definitely my favorite character. It's not like I write creepy self-insertion fanfics or something. XD

No.....its like ILR, RFTW, IWR, and RR. and now you. seriously. they don't do self-insertion(ILR might.....Might....) but i bet they dance on slaughter the world too.

I'm a little afraid to ask, but every acronym you mentioned has at least one r in it... do all of those names have richard in them? o.o

Le Masque des Ronces.
20.
I live in Paris, France, a large yet boring city filled with arrogant pseudo-intellectuals and pigeons, the latter being the nicer, although I dislike birds.
I happen to study french litterature. It's an activity which consists mainly in reading abstruse books written by obscure novellists, and speaking about psychology in big fake german accents.
I have to admit I'm not much a fantasy gamer, but enjoy reading fantasy novels and that's what got me into reading LFG.
And I have no idea of how I'm gonna end this soliloquy.

Le Masque des Ronces

Sarcasm is only a more aggressive form of irony, in my opinion. There's no conceptual difference.
Verbose
Sep 8 2007, 04:42 PM
Of course there is. Sarcasm comes from an Ancient Greek word meaning "to bite", which is why "biting sarcasm" is a common phrasing.
It is sarcasm when the words you use are an attempt to "bite" or hurt the listener.
Irony, name taken from the deceptive character Eiron, is merely the use of words to express something other than their literal intention.
Le Masque des Ronces
Sep 8 2007, 04:48 PM
Honestly, I do not see how what you have just said contradicts my statement: when you are sarcastic, you merely use ironic devices in order to hurt the interlocutor. There is no conceptual difference.
Verbose
Sep 8 2007, 04:52 PM
There is indeed, for you can be either without the other.
If I call you an "objectionable person whom I hate with great intensity" I might be speaking sarcastically. If I was, I'd be bad at it but still. Sarcastic. Attempting to hurt you. Nowhere in that sentence was irony used.
To further support my case, if I were to say, "Being thrown through a window is a shattering experience." There is irony in the form of a pun. No attempt to hurt you was made (although it could have been, if I thought a bad pun would hurt) and so I have applied irony without sarcasm.
Le Masque des Ronces
Sep 8 2007, 05:11 PM
The clause "there is no conceptual difference" merely means that it works basically the same way: sarcasm is nothing but a type of verbal irony intended to insult or wound. If you don't "state the opposite of the intended meaning" (as
Webster puts it), then you are not sarcastic.
The word "conceptual" is not just here in order to show how odiously pompous I can be. If I had wanted to assert that there were no difference between the two, I would not have used this verbose word just for the fun of it. Oh my, I have made an unintentional pun.
Verbose
Sep 8 2007, 05:34 PM
Sarcasm can mean what Webster has said. When it does, Sarcasm is irony. Irony is not sarcasm.
You use irony to be sarcastic. Irony is greater, older, more dignified and more irreverant.
Irony is the body and sarcasm is the amputated limb.

It depends on how strict your definitions are.
The definition of sarcasm has been changed in recent decades due to people mistaking it for irony. Sarcasm is supposed to mean any attempt to hurt with words.
And besides, most often now when people say, "Don't be sarcastic" they refer to a particular tone of voice rather than a style of speech.

My name is Gabe, and I've been playing WoW for about three years now. I found LFG while cruising WoWhead, and have loved it ever since. I suppose I'm more of a casual gamer because I've never really gotten a character past fifty; I keep trying out new ones. But right now I'm going to focus on Scathus (Daggerspine) and try and get him to 70. I'll also be rooting for LFG to become the next big comic, since it is so awesome.
