I average around a book every 2 days.
I don't know where my library is...I generally just go to the bookstore and read books there. They have coffee bars and such. You go, get something to drink, maybe a muffin or whatever, then grab some books that people haven't gotten all fucked up, then read for free. Thats whats up. Plus there's no overdue book charges, as long as you don't leave the store there are no criminal charges either.

I just finished re-reading "good omens" by neil gaimen and terry pratchett. I'm feeling guilty because I haven't read anything "classic" in a while. I don't mean classic as in old, but classic as in "high-brow" I guess. Not that "Good Omens" was for stupid people...but...well...I dunno. I had a literary discussion with my haircutting lady...she had read "The Davinci code" and was gushing about how brilliant it was. I remember thinking "Wow, thats not really great literature" but hell I'm not much better. My point is that no-one writes anything really "brilliant" these days. Here "brilliant" refers to dry (think "Moby Dick")

Religious controversy doesn't make something intelligent. I could write "Fuck God" on a wall and it would probably piss people off. That wouldn't make me a visionary, quite the opposite in-fact. Writing what is basically a giant church conspiracy theory doesn't speak to someone of great mental acuity. Finding fault with a legitimate concept, or even making a mockery of religion as long as its done in an interesting manner would be intelligent. Saying "This large popular organization is secretive and corrupt" isn't exactly powerful stuff.
I agree, I never said it was an intelligent book, what I had meant was that people like it because it sparked religious controversy.

The last brilliant book I read was The Broom of the System, by David Foster Wallace. Interestingly enough, the last three brilliant books I've read have all been by him: the other two being [i/]Infinite Jest[/i] and A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again.
The DaVinci Code wasn't good for it's literary merit; it was good for the way it prodded an unliterate* nation to read (kind of along the same lines as Harry Potter). While I enjoyed the story, I overlooked any literary insufficiencies he procured. I've read the rest of Dan Brown's work--I enjoyed all of them.

But that is assuming the people who see these movies will still go aead and read the book, they won't.

Many people do try to read the book before seeing the movie--many don't, as well, but many do.
More don't than do, that's wy I was devastated when H2G2 came out as a movie, so many people getting the wrong perceptions about Adams's world, never to read the book...

More don't than do, that's wy I was devastated when H2G2 came out as a movie, so many people getting the wrong perceptions about Adams's world, never to read the book...
Come on it wasn't that bad, Adams wrote 75% of it, he would have finished but you know.. he hated to write when he was forced to do it.

Such hate, It is simply a different medium so it is changed, the (two) radio series, TV series, play, and movie are all different but have the same central ideas.
I never got into the series at all. I read "the restaurant at the end of the universe" but when I tried to go back and read the first one I just couldn't do it.
Well I guess it isn't for everyone but have you tried his other books like Dirks Bently?
I hadn't even heard of his other books. I have a weird reading style: I find an author, read one of their books in a day, then read everything they've ever written. Worked for Asprin, Bradbury, Heinlein, Pratchett, Palahniuk, and Vonnegut. The only downside is that if the author doesn't quite catch me with that first book I generally don't pick up on any of their other stuff. I'm debating starting Neil Gaiman and seeing how that goes. He doesn't really have that many books.
Well the thing is that he has several layers about social commentary in everything so it takes a while to see what he is getting at which makes the actual story better.
Asprin and Pratchett both do that. I think the main problem for me was that the characters never really popped for me. Its just one of those things...they and I never "clicked"
Try Steinbeck and start with Of Mice and Men.
I thought we had covered my irrational hatred of Steinbeck. I just hate him so much. I don't even know why...its gotten to be a personal thing. I think if he and I were ever to meet there would be fisticuffs!

I found that book to be a complete miss with me. It relies on you caring, even a bit, about George and Lenny (I believe, from memory). I never did. Tragic ending and all, blah. It, like every other piece of "great literature" I've read (which is a far cry from even half of it) was just dull.
Sure, technically it was brilliant. Themes and metre and all of that jazz is great in all of those "classics". They're just not fun to read. Since they're not an enjoyable read (except in a dry, abstract way) they fail at their fundemental purpose.

A few points.
1) The Da Vinci Code was not great literature. Don't go back on that.
2) Just because it's not serious and dry doesn't mean it isn't great literature.
3) George R. R. Martin composes stories that are interesting and, I would argue, a good sight better than Tolkein.

The flaw with book to movie is a matter of focus. Movies can have a powerful effect but they can't approach things from the same angle as a book and that is why they fail so often. Details can't be made obvious where other details aren't mentioned from one medium to the other.
Generally speaking, the effect is like trying to recreate a painting using music. It can't be done as well as it should be. The best that can be done is for music to be made that matches the painting.

Spyder- Heros? Honestly not sure about that Grym. I suspect the general concept comes from the idea that one person can make a difference, though not all societies believe in such a thing. Not sure if it is a phrase borrowed from some earlier work or not...
As to the book vs. movie epic going on here, I would say it that books and movies are two different media and should be seen as such. I can and do enjoy both. As Verby put it movies cannot offer the level of detail or intraspection that a book can, but usually movies can offer stunning visuals and a fast pace that can be more difficult in a book. Some books translate very well into movie, others not so much. Unless it is truly poorly written or boring or some such, I put aside my expectaions of a book when I see movies based on books and enjoy the movie for what it is. If it is bad for one of the above reasons, then I would have hated it even if there wasn't a book involved.
I am so happy this past weekend is over. I love my nephew...I can't take more a few days with him without rest. We tend to be laid back people, not in much of a rush to do anything. He is constantly moving, wanting to be on the go or doing something. And god forbid that something be done by himself. The boy cannot seem to entertain himself at all. And if we weren't entertaining him he found the most irritating things to do to keep us from enjoying a moment of peace. I am so happy he is home now.
