I voted for more background info on all of the characters, but now I think I shouldn't have ticked Richard's box. First of all, we're already getting the movie on the origins of Richard, second, Richard is evil comic relief, he's a cypher. If we get too much backgorund on him, his childhood, his tortured soul, deep-seated emotional problems that turned him into a psychopath, bblablabla, it might ruin the fun. Too much "realism" in regard to Richard, and he stops being horrifically amusing and becomes merely horrifying. I mean, come on, he eats babies.
I don't want a whole issue only devoted to backstory, as this would bring the story to a screeching halt...
unless that issue is an extra issue for the audience only, not part of the main comic's storyline.
But yes, while I would love to see some light shed on Benny's and Krunch's history together, Cale is IMO the central character who connects them all. And he's the greatest mystery of all. Where does he come from? Does he suffer from amnesia? If he was a roleplaying character, he'd be the squared-jawed idealistic naive young hero whose player couldn't be arsed to come up with a backstory and left it to the gamemaster to fill the gaps.
It's odd that so far, none of the other characters seem to have asked Cale who he is or where he came from, and why he isn't a Vulii? Sure, the characters may have discussed this and gotten to know each other better off-screen, but a question like that and Cale's reaction I want to see onscreen. Even if Krunch had previously heard about Gamlon, as a myth, ancient history, Richard and Benny probably hadn't, since Richard told Cale "Your race, they're all evil" mistaking him for a Vulii, and Benny wondered during the fight in the tavern that Cale wasn't to clear on the concept of "evil". She probably meant "Hey, doesn't this elf recognize we are evil and thus won't help him/her?" but to me it sounds like she expected Cale the "Vulii" to be less naive since Vulii are all evil bastards. Not to mention that, when Cale came back from the past and started to babble about Gamlon and how "we will always fight the descendants of the Vulii" Benny wondered aloud what Cale was talking about. I'm sure she hadn't heard the name Gamlon before.
The odd thing is, no-one has asked Cale why he's so different? No-one wondered when Tavor suddenly turned up? I can accept that Cale used the long sea voyage to Kethenecia to fill in the others about his adventure in Ancient Day Gamlon during his Worst Portal Ever solo quest. But still, we never got to see what exactly Cale told the others. He must've told them something, but... wouldn't this have prompted Benny or Krunch to ask him, "So, Cale, do you think you are a descendant of the Gamlonians? Where the heck did you come from, anyway?"? (Richard doesn't care about others.)
The only explanation I have for the lack of questions is that because Benny doesn't like to talk about her own past she feels it's too intrusive to ask other people about
their past; or she's afraid that once she starts asking Cale personal questions he will then start taking an interest in her simply in an attempt to be polite, and then she'll have to dodge questions about things she doesn't want to talk about or doesn't know, such as her race. Or maybe she simply, honestly isn't interested in Cale, beyond the fact that he's alive, good with a sword and bow and a useful idiot.
