War in the Artic?

How many people are getting a bit nervous over this?

first Russia floats on up and says they prepare to defend there claim.

Now Canada is building 2 new military bases up there.

The world can be a depressing place :'(
Grym
but the world of this forum doesnt have to be? Can we talk about happier things
Rae-Rae =^.^=
This is the general discussion thread... it's pretty much anything goes as long as it follows the guidelines Ghis and Kay already laid out.

I never heard of Russia and Canada sending supplies or claim stakes into the Arctic. Is there a news article or anything on it?
iloverichard
i haven't heard ANYTHING about it. period. blink.gif does that mean i'm stupid? *tremble*
BloodyPiper
I havent heard anything about it, but the fact that this is about the furthest point away from me right now doesnt mean a thing.
Rae-Rae =^.^=
If they end up resorting to nukes, it'll be a global catastrophe. Radioactive particles can get caught in the jet streams and literally travel ANYWHERE over the globe.
BloodyPiper
We can only hope that they are not stupid enough to nuke a pole.... really that would not be smart. Speed up the 'ol Global Warming a bit?
Grym
only a teensy massive bit. I wonder if it would have any reaction to the magnetic stuff of the pole
Blue
Most countrys are smart enough not to nuke people, now nukes are just meant to look threatening.

The countrys who are stupid enough to nuke people arn't smart enough to know how to make them.
Space_Mummy
Lets go M.A.D, W00t W00t!

Stupid mutually assured destruction.

Why can't we settle our wars on some kind of chess match or something?
Wiseguy
Funny of them to figth over the artic hence its going to smelt away in a matter of years (ooh well some centurys +/- some more)
Nesstar
Countries are not dumb enough to use nukes? *cough* America *Cough*

Anywho the reason why they are coming to these terms is most likely involving oil
Ballscratch
Isn't Russia just claiming the land BENEATH the Artic? Because technically, the Artic is a floating mass and Russia wants oil rights to the land below?
PianoManGidley
There's no war in the Artic, because there's no such place. A war might brew in the Arctic, however.
Ballscratch
I thank you for your correction. However, there is a lil' place called the Artic, though it has nothing to do with this conversation.
Rae-Rae =^.^=
Where is the Artic? And the English language as a whole is a conspiracy. What other language is studied for 12 years by native speakers and they STILL can't get it right half the time?
Ballscratch
North, top of the planet. If you mean Arctic. Artic is a little shop I know.
Rae-Rae =^.^=
Oh, I was asking about Artic, not Arctic. What's the little shop have? Sounds like it's either has gaming merch, or it's a coffeehouse.

hm..yah the world IS depressing..but hey ^-^ start to laugh and make joke about everything..it helps, trust me ;P

Okay, usually I am a chipper, bubbly and all-around happy person (snickering from the audience), but here is my two-pence and then I'll crouch in the shadows like some lurking vulture...

First off, why ask such a silly political question? Unless you're Bill O'Reilly and your blog's lifeforce depends on your understanding of the inherent egotism of mankind, just let things rest in the realm of all things fantasy. Not to say that it isn't refreshing to see the hearts and minds of today's youth clawing at the bit of what they will inhereit once the old retire. Understanding your world is so very important, especially when it comes time for you to vote. Like Gramma Crazy-eyes used to scream at me: "Don't vote, don't complain, Billy."

Secondly, as for your query on why Russia and Canada feel a need to claim a chunk of mutated freezer gunk, it is inbred into all men (and that isn't being sexist since it is still politically correct to refer to Humans as "man" or "mankind") that we are territorial. On this small planet we call home, there are only so many places that the alpha-wolves can attempt to strut their reasons for claiming something they may or may not need. Personally, I think there is little reason to take over something that will melt anyhow in the next billion years. Really bad investment strategy.

Thirdly, the world is only depressed (and take this in all of its hippie context, please) because we have allowed ourselves to forget the fire and passion that our forefathers had. We've learned to become complacent until the moment we need to be heard - and even then we do little to redeem ourselves when we blame others for our own lack of action. The few who take the initiative to become "revolutionists" and try to revert the world back to where it once was can be viewed as either seeing the world through rose-colored glasses or too sordid to really do anything; then they are brushed off and forgotten. If everyone does their share to improve their lives and improve the lives of those around them, you'd be surprised how much of a difference it makes.
Ballscratch
Actually, it's an art exhibition place for local artists.

well from my point of view the world is depressing because:

-There is no such thing as "equality" for everyone (im white-trash..so its not about "noes im black the world is unfair"..the world would be "nice" if i wouldnt despite ..lets say "not open minded people" and TELL em tongue.gif). But hey, we could loose an election if we would try to change that O.O

-Hitler was right with "what luck for leaders that people dont think", because usually those who start to think and act do that because they reached a point of no return, which also makes them not so creditable to people. (edit: that sentence is teh only thing he was right with and none of the stuff he did was good or anything near it ! quoting someone doesnt mean anything !)

-Money rules everything. If you think thats wrong, try to not loose your drivers license when driving 230km/h in a 70zone. I know both sides, one lost, one got a "bad bad boy" letter. Just one example, but one thats easy to understand : )
There is no "being nice" or anything like that when it comes to big business. There are "nice" people with influence, but those are not bosses of big companies and stuff. And no, spending some millions for stuff like red cross does not make you a good person tongue.gif

Yes im throwing around archetypes and rascism for fun and i just served godwins law tongue.gif

People are stupid, people are afraid, people are gullible, and worst of it all: Most people are to LAZY to change any of that because..noes it could be uncomfortable to move my butt outta the door and help some guy gettin his ass kicked because hes "different".
Thats the most depressing part for me.
but ofc there is way more ^^
spyderjaxon
Spyder- A person can be smart, people are idiots...herd mentality for the win! Or is it lose...?
Nesstar
Moo this way? k... what follow this guy now? ok thats kinda dumb but ok...Now what? thats frigging redicolous he cant do that.. some one should do something...Moo
Hunter
The herd never knows when it is being thinned out either.
free
exactly that ^^
I just wanted to say "Sorry if someone feels like im stepping on his toes or anything. What i wrote up there is totally my oppinion, not the one truth, maybe its not even a tad right. So, sorry if it sounds rude or anything : )" : )

But since im lazy i just second the herd emotion..."moo" ^-^
Hunter
Well when I am PM things will change, mostly because the money that all elected officials get will drop since they don't need so much.
spyderjaxon
Spyder- So long as you care what someone else thinks about you, that person will always have power over you...

(That will be my last 'wise' saying)
Hunter
So you will just have dumb ones for the rest of the day? Or is Jaxon going to start talking to us?
spyderjaxon
Spyder- tongue.gif , hunter, just tongue.gif . Alas my Jaxon is not at home at the moment.
free
As long as i dont care what people think ? And i always thought that as long as i dont believe in something it has no power over me : O

Also: Im trapped in a village filled with "ghetto gangsters" and posers..im the lonely dude with the e-guitar and the battery-powered-amplifier sitting in the sun playing and not caring about anything tongue.gif So if it goes for your theory im immune to being a tool <3 xD
Im goin to get seriously drunk with a band in a farfar away city, so i wont be back till tomorrow evening i guess tongue.gif
Ill drink one for you, and you, and you...hell ill just drink as much as i can. And pls excuse me if i cant drink one for everyone on this board..but i promise ill try..OI! tongue.gif
Nesstar
HF and drink some crown royal or canadian club for me!!!

If life was ment to be fair, we would all have died a long time ago.
Nesstar
How so?
Triforceelf
Ever done something really nasty to some one? Ever seen some body do something really nasty that deserved pay back? If every crime you have ever committed was visited with full justice and retribution, we would all die.

...all of them?

But seriously, we don't study English for twelve years. We barely spend a year or two on in. Learn a foreign language. At no point do you get asked to read Shakespeare from a feminist perspective.

English classes are an absolute joke and this is why most people can't speak good the English.

I've yet to hear of a lurking vulture.

Equality sucks. No way will I support a system where the intelligent and the talented are held on precisely and exactly the same level as the mentally retarded and physically incapable.

Because you can't make those people better, so for equality to exist you have to bring the high down low. Screw that. Give me an established, regimented meritocratic heirarchy any day.

And people is made up of persons. Face it, people are dumb. Real dumb. So are individuals.

Life is fair. What lives is what survives, and what survives is what can live. Sounds fair to me. Just don't get all whiney because humans are so destructive to the environment oh noes!

We are in a constant state of war. Life survives by feeding off the life of other living things. Plants starve each other of light to grow bigger and steal more light and water. All life wars with itself all the time. We're just better than most of it.
Nesstar
Not I. I have never harmed someone in the way u describe. I may have insulted someone out of anger but i have recieved the same. Is my punishment to be mulitplied?

Some times I get pissed at some of the things i think. EX i am waiting 15 mins to get a coffee and i see that the person at the till is handicapped and is clearly struggling. I think WTF why do they have a handicapped person on the till. I later get pissed at myself saying that they also need a job and fast food and what not is generally the only place they can get. I was in no way mad at the fellow on the till but more angry at the owner for have someone clearly not capable at handling the rush on the till. Making the world fair does not have to mean taking everyones life and wealth then averaging it out.

Your right, but we are comparing two very different kinds of fairness. You refer to the law of nature, or "the strong will survive." I refer to the law of moral codes that mankind has put in place (dont give me any crap about different civilizations have different moral codes, they all can basically be boiled down to the last 9 of the ten commandments) that states that if you commit a crime (a "sin" if you will) you should have justice visited upon you. This justice is harsh, and if you were shown no mercy (that would be "fair" mercy is not fair as it shows a preference and allows someone to escape their fairly earned punishment) you would die from the sheer harm inflected upon your mind and body in retribution.
Nesstar
Meh i say an eye for an eye
Triforceelf
no, you really dont. No one really wants every crime they have commited visited upon them. The sheer havoc it would reek upon humanity would utterly destroy us. every time you committed a crime it would be revisited upon you eternally, as you would retaliate and the cycle would continue until you ultimately perished.

Mercy, kindness and forgiveness save the world. they destroy fairness, but who wants a fair world?

But it's unfair to have any other system than that. People can't control the finances, talents or genes they're born with. So, to treat all humanity fairly, they must all be considered tabula rasa; blank slates.

I'm a Hobbesian (of sorts).

My moral code boils down to:

1. Life is shit.
2. If we all sacrifice our freedoms to a Leviathan (a government), we limit how shit we are to each other.
3. The Leviathan has no obligations - if it is not a good one we take our freedoms back and go give them to someone else and hope for the best.

According to my moral codes, humanity's doin' fine.

Don't look through the Judeo-Christian glasses of self-flagellation because it's so done already.
Nesstar
What? honestly i have not done anything that would ever doom me. Fairness is not religion. Just because some ones steals a loaf of bread does not mean its FAIR to cut his hand off. That is what the judicial system was created for. True they make mistakes and can often be corrupt, but religion justice is usually way to stricked to be considered fair in any form.
Verbose
Those were two seperate answers. One on moral turpitude and the other on the distasteful idea of fairness.

Edit: Triffy was noting that I responded with a Natural argument to his Ethical claim and called bullshit on it. It was a clever spot that most chumps never notice.
Nesstar
what we need is more cow bell
Triforceelf
No, its not religion. Its moral philosophy in the style Aristotle (who was an athiest) nor am I implying you have ever done something horribly wrong. But what about all the small things? They do add up. Eventually, all the small little spites, all the small little rash actions, bruises and wounds you have inflicted add up. If the world was fair, they would all be revisited upon you.

Edit: Me clicky to many buttons. Cause much bad voodoo and upset mighty forum mods. You make many posts and hide bad voodoo.

Dont bet to hard on that. Everyone gets crap, but everyone gives it too. Just remember, all are guilty. Pray to whoever you believe in for mercy. Perhaps they shall listen. If you are all you believe in... Your pretty much fucked.
Nesstar
Bah u are not making any sence. Every one gives and everyone takes. I have hurt people i have been hurt by people that is life. I am a nice person and there are many people like me out there. I help people when i see they need it. I also get very little help in my life expecially when i need it. I dont insult people and i dont hurt people. I have recieved what i have dished out. There is no way my life would turn into a living hell if my sins are punished by equal sins.
Triforceelf
