So get this. Me and my roommates are moving. They have most of their stuff out, are taking it to their new place in Austin, and are coming back tomorrow to get a second load. I have been packing slower, since I plan to be there another week, but last night I took the first (small) load of my stuff to my mothers' house, where I will be storing it for the next year while I am in Japan. It was very late when we took over the load of stuff, so I crashed at Mom's place.

Today, this morning, my landlord apparently went to the house, saw no one was there, and decided the place must have been abandoned. Never mind the fact he saw me there YESTERDAY, or that I still have a large pile of boxes already packed in the middle of the den-room-thingie. He started to bag up everything left in the house, and had started burning stuff in the fireplace! My room is currently a royal mess, because I am sorting everything as I pack it, and I still have 2/3 of my stuff to pack.

My friend Shane happened to go by to pick up his umbrella, and saw what the guy was doing. He yelled at the guy and got him to stop, luckily. Shane was royally pissed, and yelled at the guy for it, but I swear to effing GOD... I am going back to my place in about 10 minutes here, to assess the damage. And if that motherfukker burned or threw away so much as a single SCRAP of TRASH that belongeed to me.... Just no. No fukking way, dude. Shane said he couldn't identify what had been burned, but when I see what's left in my room, I should be able to tell pretty easily. And.... just no. No no no no NO....

Landlords exist soly to screw over renters. Its part of the natural order of things. For example I pay five seperate utility bills: water, gas, electric, heat, and A/C. I'm not entirely sure what the gas bill is for because I have an electric stove that appears on my electric bill...and the heat is always on yet I still pay 20 bucks a month for the A/C...a check that goes directly into the building managers pocket by the way. The cost of the communal washer dryer gets spread across all tenant accounts as well. Good times.

Yeah, the guy is skrewed. A lot of what he burned was unopened mail I had sitting on the table waiting for my roommates to return to get the rest of their stuff. That's destroying/tampering with mail - a federal offense. And the other stuff he burned - comic books, text books, etc. - personal property. That's arson - another felony. It turns out all he STOLE was all our liquor and canned goods. That was about $500 worth of stuff at least, but a lot of the stuff he threw away I managed to recover from the trash before my roomies got home, so THEY at least didn't have to deal with going through the trash. (It was disgusting...) Some of the stuff was ruined, collectables, and stuff like that. We are considering either small claims court, calling the post office and letting them nail him, or asking him how much it is worth to him $$$-wise to not go to court and probably jail. Havn't decided yet.

Either way, you take that fuck for everything you can get out of him, also you can probably nail him for destruction of property AND the burning of your mail. Anyway as long as you come out ahead and him in the shitter.

If your court system is anything like the one we have here be damn careful, it can cost you more to go through the legal procedures than often you get out of it.

and for my first sort of on topic post: I have not had this happen to me (I'm only thirteen. that stuff aint gonna happen for a long time) But for me, that would be horrible. I am a massive packrat. I HATE throwing ANYTHING away. My room, is filled with junk. I have little clay figures I made in like the fourth grade from some video game that was all the rage back then (I still like the video game though) Losing anything, no matter how insignifigant, saddens me. having this happen to me, would be devastating.

tampering with mail, arson with intent, destruction of personal property, theft, breaking and entering (this one is a hard one to nail on the landlord but it can be done), and im just guessing here but you didnt give him consent to go through your personal possesions so there has to be something you can get from that.
