If you smashed the front off of your TV, could you make one?
The Lone David
Nah Grym, you'd have to use your microwave.
SenbeiRoshi
With the new power supply design, charge time would vary with desired output, but the fact that the beam has to travel through air to reach it's target reduces the effective range, as some of it's energy is absorbed by the air. It would be possible to pre-ionize the pathway to allow the beam, or pulse, to travel farther, but this would use more power and require additional charge time. Higher powered, custom built units could be feasible for troop deployment if a large capacity portable power source could be devised, of which I have a few ideas I'm working on. And yes, you could build one with parts from your TV, I built mine from an old oscilloscope.
Super Gamer 117
That reminds me: I dissected my bro's old Computer for my dad for parts to his projects he makes. He's an electrical engineer tongue.gif
Grym
Interesting. Approximatley how quickly would, say, a tree disentegrate if you had the gun pointed right at it from point blank range.

Could you possibly attach one to say, a tank? Use the power from that to take down walls and stuff.
Grym
Unless the walls are reinforced by metal.
SenbeiRoshi
Well, the entire tree would not disintegrate, you would, in effect, disintegrate a beam sized hole through the tree. Would only take about 1s/6" thickness of wood, with the original power requirements. With the cascade charge system, a small-medium pulse would blast a golfball sized divot into concrete.

As for mounting on a tank or other such vehicle, it is most definitely a scalable operation, so the more robust the power supply and TEG (thermionic electron gun) the more power and range. A constant beam application on the scale of a howitzer would have a pretty good range, and would only be deterred by large masses of highly-conductive material.

yeah, I expected that about the tree. For the concrete wall, could you set the thing on a wide beam, sort of a cone shaped expanding beam?
Grym
Move along. You didn't see anything.

It would be possible to vary the dispersion, by varying the confinement accelerators at the output, but this would drastically reduce the range. Even as small as a 10 degree cone would make the effective range of a portable unit only about 5 feet, and do very little damage, since it relies on concentrations of electrons. But it could be used for polishing/smoothing surfaces in this mode.
Grym
Interesting.
SenbeiRoshi
Hrm... I haven't thought this in-depth about possibilities of operation in a long while, but I just realized, that by the many worlds hypothesis of quantum mechanics, the electrons travel all possible paths at once, so this weapon would be trans-dimensional... Muwahahahaha... Even more devastating than I originally thought... Richard would be proud I think.
Grym
he-he-he-he! Attack the peoplez frum other dimensionals!

Single as in available or just all of us. Because even those of in relationships should be feared.

You need to think those things through, what if someone gets hold of the instructions to make one and pulls a VA Tech again? There would be nearly no way to find the guy if he could move between outlets or had a decently sized power source on him.

Hehe... Well, fortunately, I have not described the proper way to manufacture this, and the plans are not available anywhere as far as I am aware, so the poor sucker who tries to build one had better have a fairly good knowledge of particle physics and electro-magnetic field theory, or they would likely end up electrocuting themselves... This setup teeters on the brink of overload by design, and can build up a lot of potential current very quickly, and it only takes about 10mA of current across the heart to kill you...

Well Zin I think you are the most "normal" looking of the lot of us... But my question is why do white kids keep giving themselves Asian style names? You only make me want to call you George and Mary so much more since they are the Whitest names one can get.

Hahah, well said Hunter. I can't exactly explain the 'Asian-ness' of my online handle, I just know way back in 1996 when I came up with my handle it sounded rather fitting for me. All I ask is don't call me george because I have an asian friend named george, lol.

Cheers to looking the most 'normal', I do what I can. biggrin.gif

For me, it's a name I came up with while studying Japanese in school. Loosely translated, Senbei Roshi means Rice-Cracker Dragon... You can infer whatever you wish from that... And you forgot one of the most common white-boy names, mine, being John, so little wonder I would choose to use something different for an online persona.
Hunter
I have to say its interesting getting the backstory to peoples handles but I was actually wondering about when people do it in real life, you know the folks that will straight up call themselves some Asian name that they picked up from a show or school. Rather off-topic but most vets of the LFG boards know that is how I started out here.
SenbeiRoshi
Well, I've never known someone to do that in real life, I'd probably make them feel small and insecure if someone who obviously had no asian blood in them tried to say their name was Takezo Kensei or some such foolishness... Then I would berate them in Japanese, and make them wish they had kept their mouth shut... Baka-na gaijin, anata no tamashii o nusunde...
Frosti
You mean that people call themselves brainless moron or something like that?
Hunter
Another language is good fun but I find that using cussless insults that span several sentences is best for me.

Idiot Foreigner, you so.... and the rest I suck at translating. lol.

Of all the languages I'd love to learn Japanese the most, go figure. But yeah, I don't use my handle IRL unless it's my old school gaming buddies who met me through online gaming, then it's pretty much common place.
SenbeiRoshi
Yes, "Stupid barbarian, I will steal your soul" is a fun phrase for the whole family!

I know an asian kid named Jimmy.
Rae-Rae =^.^=
The whitest name ever is Howard. Or Harold...

But what about all of us who are born Asian, and not merely Asian through obsession? Do I look normal enough for you...

Last time I ever wear you, you silly British Columbian.
Hunter
Not normal as a white person... you don't get to call a metis on race, more of how chill he looks. You always have a bit of crazy in your eyes.

A handle is one thing. Kajira is actually loosely translated into "slave" and Sayuri, when broken apart is "giving" and "together." It was a sick joke given to me by a few female cohorts who assumed I needed a male influence in my life. As for my name? I don't think I look like a Lisa, but apparently my parents decided that "Rachel," "Olivia," and "Amanda" weren't good enough for me.

By the way, redheads will own the world.

That all depends, is it the ends that turn blonde, or the roots?
Frosti
The roots, but afterwards they turn brown again, leaving a blonde ring-shaped... shape. Like an aureole.

I think a saint would have thought of the shape as a halo... Since it is the roots though, you may be half Sartan...
