I play alto almost exclusively now, but I used to play Bari in middle school. Little ol' me can't quite march with an instrument that's almost as tall as me, and weighs nearly as much as me.

The Bass Clarinet is an underrated instrument with a hauntingly gorgeous and rich tone. In fact, one of my (still unfinished) pieces for band starts out with a bass clarinet solo.

But yes, I lurve playing bari sax. I miss it greatly. That school horn was awesome--Selmer SuperAction 80, low A, high F#. I need to get myself a horn like that and start playing again. I'd love to play in a big band again, really.

"With a painful care." It's the first line from the second of two poems in "Dos Canciones" by 15th Century Spanish poet Jorge Manrique (his age putting his works well within the boundaries of fair use). I thought that poem would make for a beautiful song (and apparently, I'm not the first one to set it to music). Spanish poetry is some of the most gorgeous phonetics I've ever heard, and I was looking for a lament to be sung by an alto about lost love--once again, the sound of a female voice in a good low alto or tenor range (really contralto all around) has a hauntingly beautiful quality to it that, when done right is downright ethereal. And if you don't believe that, then just listen to some albums by Lisa Gerrard.

So, yeah--the female alto singing Spanish poetry combined with a bass clarinet (though it was originally supposed to be cello--I think bass clarinet works just as well if not better) and a delicate piano combine to make my attempt at something bordering haunting, ethereal beauty.
