Am I the only one displeased by the amount of humanoid species in the comic?

Elves.
Humans.
3-fingered, green-skinned, humanoids.
Tauren.
(presumably) Orcs.
Gnomes.
Half-Breed Trolls.
Blue men.
Cat men.
Lizard Men...

The list goes on, and on, and on. So I have to ask why so many races? I don't like it when stories include tons of humanoid species because it takes away from the charachter and borders on ridiculous. Unless the race has a distinguished feature (like Tauren; able to kill a dragon by leaping on it?) it really shouldn't be included.

I don't think it takes away from the character, the only times the race has even been mentioned with relevance to the plot were when Cale commented on Half-Trolls intelligence, the fact that gnomes look like children, and that elves are evil, if he race doesn't matter then why should you care what species they happen to be?

*Resists the urge to sing that Michael Jackson song.*

"It don't matter if you're blue or green!"

>.< I tried.

Note to self: keep small children away from Lunaya...

Why can't weeee be friends?

The color of your skin don't matter to me....

If anything, the proliferation of humanoid races tells me that their world is a bit more integrated than our own. I mean, with all of these shapes, colors, and sizes running around in the same circles, I'd say a lot are half-breeds. Mixed-bloods. Seems like everyone just goes along, though prejudices still exist.

Actually, now that I think on it, that's kinda what we got going in our own world. Hm. Nicely done.

it includes so many races because WoW has so many races. in WoW, have u ever seen more than 10 different types of races, computer or online player?

Funny you should say that David. I happen to be an assistant teacher. I help take care of about a dozen two-year olds. ph34r.gif

i think we should just lay low about all this "she's a troll, no, he's a blood elf" thing, it's getting pretty annoying.

plus, Sohmer has created this world.. it's better to enjoy it than destroy it.

i don't know about you all, but i could never imagine all this and post a web-comic twice a week!!!

Don't forget to add the redskinned guy with tiny devil horns, the street vendor in the Port of Tyne, to the list.

Now, what I want to see are swashbuckling foxes in a sash and waistcoat and a broadbrimmed hat. With a huge feather in it! cool.gif
Just kidding. Well maybe a bit.

Fantasy worlds commonly seem to come only in two flavours: Either the human race is dominant and other intelligent races if they even exist are not part of their cities, or you get the usual D&D/WoW riot of shapes and forms.... Eberron, Forgotten Realms, Planescape.

Too many species????

Ever read the Spellsinger series by Alan Foster? Everything in that whole world is pretty much sentient....
Captain
You think ten is a lot?

Ten?

Twenty to Thirty is dead standard, and that's not including sub or offshoot races/species.
Jet
the only time too many species is a problem is in, for example, cases like Piers anthony's Xanth series. unless you're a long time reader, you tend to miss out on all the constant references. otherwise, variety is a great thing. frankly, the more colorful a world the better tongue.gif
