Although not exactly the same word for word, it is the same situational irony right?
I daresay both comics borrow from the same source. "(S)he fell down the stairs" is a common excuse that wife-beaters/rapists /child-molesters and their cowed victims give in many TV dramas and movies when being asked why the wife or child looks so beaten up and covered in bruises. (I've no idea if that excuse is really used as frequently in real life, too.)
Of course the irony in this case is that the excuse is completely ridiculous, given the situation. It's as if Richard is vaguely aware that you are supposed to invent some explanation to keep up appearances, but he can't even be bothered to come up with anything plausible. He simply intimidates the victim into corroborating his story.
