Not to turn this into a Religious discussion, but the main purpose of the Rosary is for praying. It is used to keep track of where one is in a group of prayers said together.

Hmm... My baptist friend hangs one on her dresser to ward off spirits...

Prayer is the main purpose but it dose have other uses such as warding off evil spirits (ie. devils).
